Celebrate Memorial Day Weekend in Lakeside Chautauqua
Over Memorial Day weekend, join us in Lakeside Chautauqua as we remember U.S. military men and women who lost their lives while serving our country and honor those retired and in active duty.
  
We'll also kick off the summer and offer a glimpse of the Chautauqua experience through the many religious, educational, cultural and recreational programs offered.
  
The Lakeside Chautauqua gates are in operation starting at 7 a.m. Friday, May 27 until 7 p.m. Monday, May 30. A Daily Chautauqua Pass, which is a reduced price for Memorial Day weekend, is required to enter the grounds; $13.75/adult and $8.75/youth (ages 12-18) per day. Season Chautauqua Passes are also available. 
  
Children under the age of 12 and guests over the age of 90 are always free, but require complimentary passes, which are available upon entering Lakeside. A Partial Day Chautauqua Pass (valid 3 hours) is also available for $7.
  
A Daily Auto Pass is required for Memorial Day weekend.
To park on the grounds, the cost is $10.50 per day (complimentary shuttle service is available at select locations). Parking is also available at the South Gate Parking Lot for $5 per day (limited parking; complimentary shuttle service is available at the Welcome Center). The Danbury School Parking Lot will not be available for parking over the holiday weekend, as school is still in session. Season Auto Passes are also available.
  
To drop off, unload or load vehicles, a complimentary,
30-Minute Drop-Off Pass may be obtained. Guests will then be asked to return their vehicle to the South Gate Parking Lot after they're finished.
  
A schedule of events is listed below. The holiday weekend also includes full service hotels, complimentary shuttle and recreational activities, such as miniature golf, shuffleboard, tennis, children's pool and splash park. Most businesses will also be open.
The Patriots Symphonic Band 
7:30 p.m. Friday, May 27
Hoover Auditorium

The Patriots Symphonic Band will kick off Memorial Day weekend entertainment in Lakeside with a concert that appeals to all ages. 

The band presents a broad spectrum of musical styles and features a variety of instrumental and vocal soloists at each concert.
 
The Patriots Symphonic Band is a non-profit, all-volunteer music organization in Lorain County, Ohio.
 
Members, who are drawn from numerous communities in northeast Ohio, range from teenagers to age 90 and older.
  
Orchestra Hall Movie: "The Jungle Book"

Orchestra Hall will feature "The Jungle Book," a recently-released, live-action drama full of adventure for fans of the original, animated film.
 
Upon entering Lakeside, ask the gate attendant for a complimentary Movie Pass to view this film. A Daily or Season Auto Pass is required for parking.
 
This fast-paced, family film follows Mowgli (Neel Sethi), a man-cub who's been raised by wolves.
 
Lakeside Plant Sale & Gardening Demonstrations

The Lakeside Plant Sale will feature a variety of annuals, perennials, herbs, ground covers and small nursery stock for purchase. All proceeds from the sale will help keep the Lakeside Chautauqua grounds beautiful throughout the summer.

In addition to the plant sale, there will be four gardening demonstrations provided by Corso's Flower & Garden Center. 
  
Annette and Tom Mercer, landscape designers at Corso's, will lead the demonstrations. They are both Ohio State University graduates and have a combined 56 years of experience in maintaining landscapes in Ohio.

Join Kristen DeVanna-Fussell, PhD, from the Ohio Sea Grant College Program at Stone Laboratory, who will share facts about these fascinating creatures.
 
Understand more about their long live in the water and short life on land, as well as their purpose in our ecosystem.
The Motortown All-Stars 
7:30 p.m. Saturday, May 28
Hoover Auditorium
 

As part of Lakeside's Memorial Day weekend entertainment, The Motortown All-Stars, a mix of all-star vocalists from former legendary groups, will return to Hoover Auditorium.
 
The group, assembled from members of The Capitols, The Miracles and The Temptations, have helped make many of their songs "timeless classics."
 
On stage, the all-stars will perform selections from their former groups, as well as The Four Tops, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder.

Each show is jam-packed with choreography and harmonies capturing the true sound of Motown.

The traditional Motown sound was originally called "the sound of young America" and has become the soundtrack for generations around the world for more than 50 years.

This style of music features vocal hooks that have empowered some of the most memorable songs in music history, which can be heard on everything from movie soundtracks to television commercials.

Hoover Community Worship Service

The Rev. Dr. Joan Brown Campbell will serve as guest preacher at the Hoover Community Worship Service over the holiday weekend.

Her sermon, titled "God Bless America, Are We Ready for This Blessing?," is based on Revelation 21:2-5 and Isaiah 65:19-25. Children's Church will also be available.
 
The names of those buried in the Memorial Garden at Chautauqua Park, and those who have died during the 2015-2016 year, will be read aloud during the service.
 
In addition to the Hoover Community Worship Service, the Pavilion East Deck will hold Dockside Worship with Eucharist, led by the Rev. Dr. Irwin Jennings, at 8:30 a.m. The Lakeside United Methodist Church will also hold a service, led by the Rev. Dr. Vernon Shepherd, at 9 a.m.
 
For those who wish to attend worship, a complimentary Church Pass may be obtained from 7:30-10:30 a.m. Sunday; valid until 3 p.m. The pass includes admittance for guests and auto.

The Rev. Dr. Brown Campbell is lecturer, author and Emeritus Director of Religious Life for Chautauqua Institution in New York. She is an ordained minister in two Christian denominations, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and the American Baptist Church.

In every job she has held, she was the first woman to carry that responsibility. She was the first woman to be Associate Executive Director of the Greater Cleveland Council of Churches; the first woman to be Executive Director of the U.S. Office of the World Council of Churches; the first ordained woman to be General Secretary of the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the USA; and she was the first woman Director of Religious Life at Chautauqua Institution.

The cost is $20/adult, $10/child (ages 4-10) and children age 3 and under are free.

Lakeside Heritage Society: Memorial Day Remembrance Lecture & "Medal of Honor" Documentary  
2-3:30 p.m. Sunday, May 29 
Chautauqua Hall 

Following a brief remembrance of local Marblehead Peninsula men who gave their lives fighting for our country, a PBS documentary, titled "Medal of Honor," will be shown.
 
This 2008 production, incorporating black and white and color film footage, traces the history of the Medal of Honor from its inception during the Civil War through the Iraq War, focusing on a few of the valiant men who earned the medal.
Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church Youth Choir

Steele Memorial Bandstand/Gazebo

The Vestavia Hills United Methodist Church (UMC) Youth Choir, New Life Singers, will perform a special Concert in the Park over Memorial Day weekend.
 
The New Life Singers, under the direction of Quint Harris, is a youth choir from Vestavia Hills UMC in Birmingham, Ala.
 
The choir was established in 1979 and has a long tradition of choral singing. The group consists of 30 youth, grades 6-12, that participate in regular worship services held at the church.
 
"The Chipper Experience! Where Comedy & Magic Collide"

Chipper Lowell combines humor, juggling stunts, magic and audience participation in his entertaining show titled, "The Chipper Experience! Where Comedy & Magic Collide."

Lowell has been performing for more than 20 years and is a two-time Comedy Magician of the Year and Specialty Magician of the Year.

In addition, Magic Magazine ranked him among the Top Funniest Magicians Performing Today.

He performs worldwide, bringing his show to countries such as England, Australia and New Zealand.

His talents as a magician have taken his career beyond the stage. Lowell has been featured on various TV shows, commercials and has made a few cameo appearances in feature films.

He has been called "delightfully funny," "a riot of belly laugh activity," "specialty act of the year" and an "artistic cyclone of talent and comedy" by the press.

Laughlin Entertainer Magazine has described his show as "something of a cross between Chris Farley and Eddie Izzard; Lowell hits audiences over the head with his wit, creative comedy and trunks full of eclectic props. His show is unique, refreshing and original. A carnival ride with surprising dips and turns."

Lowell combines his talents as a comedian with juggling stunts, props and original magic in his performance.

In the show, Lowell will juggle, perform feats of magic and incorporate razor-sharp adlibs, as well as quirky inventions. 
 
Memorial Day Parade & Ceremony
10:30 a.m. Monday, May 30
War Memorial at James Park, Village of Marblehead

This year, the Village of Marblehead will host the peninsula's Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony.
  
The parade will begin at 10:30 a.m. in Clemons Cemetery (E. Main Street) and proceed to the War Memorial in James Park.
  
After the parade, all are invited to take part in the Memorial Day ceremony.
Important Gate Announcements
Starting Memorial Day weekend (May 27-30) and continuing through the Chautauqua summer season (Saturday, June 18 until Monday, Sept. 5), there will be a change to the South Gate operating schedule.
 
From Sunday-Wednesday evenings (with the exception of Monday, July 4), the South Gate entrance will be closed from 11 p.m.-7 a.m. From Thursday-Saturday evenings, the South Gate entrance will be closed from 1-5 a.m. This includes the South Gate booth, Welcome Center and Route 163 black iron gate outside the South Gate Parking Lot.  

Traffic will be directed to the Fifth Street Gate, which is open 24 hours, seven days a week.

The South Gate Parking Lot will be accessible from inside the gates, with traffic directed to the Fifth Street Gate for exiting. The shuttle will continue its regular route.
Save on 2016 Season Chautauqua Passes
In order to support the Lakeside Chautauqua mission, provide quality programming in all four Chautauqua pillars, and maintain the facilities and grounds, guests are required to pay a Chautauqua Pass admission fee to enter the grounds during Memorial Day weekend and the Chautauqua summer season.
 
Guests are encouraged to purchase Season Chautauqua Passes before Wednesday, June 1 at a discounted rated of $660. For orders received on or after June 1, the price will be $695.
 
Season Auto Passes are available at a discounted rate of $150 before June 1. For orders received on or after June 1, the price will be $170.

An Art in the Park event, organized by the Rhein Center, will take place from 1-3 p.m. Sunday, May 29 on the Pavilion Lawn near Park Row.
  
Meet the Rhein Center staff and have fun creating free 'make & take' art projects for the entire family.

Lakeside Heritage Society Recycle Sale
The Lakeside Heritage Society Recycle Sale will take place from 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday, May 27-Sunday, May 29 and 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday, May 30 in South Auditorium. Items for sale include housewares, linens, furniture and lawn equipment.
  
Deliver donations to the Heritage Society Archives porch, located at 324 W. Third St., or call Carol Morgan for pick up at (419) 798-5217.
  
Proceeds from the sale benefit the Lakeside Heritage Society.

Wooden Boat Rides
On Saturday, May 28 and Sunday, May 29, Lakesiders will have an opportunity cruise the lake on classic, wooden boats.
  
These 30-minute rides begin at 6 p.m., with the last ride departing at 7:30 p.m. The cost is $20/adult and $6/youth (ages 4-12). Children age 3 and under are not permitted.

Teen Center
Our newly renovated Teen Center will be open for ages 13-18 from 4-10 p.m. Saturday, May 28 and Sunday, May 29.
  
Located in the Lower Pavilion Room, the Teen Center features comfortable seating, charging stations, Wii U, Xbox One, foosball and much more.
  
There will be limited programming for teens over the holiday weekend.
  
Heritage Hall Museum
Heritage Hall Museum, located at 238 Maple Ave., will be open for guests from 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday, May 28 and 1:30-4 p.m. Sunday, May 29.
  
The museum exhibits include artifacts, documents, photographs, antiques and memorabilia from Lakeside Chautauqua and across the Marblehead Peninsula.
  
Memorial Day Weekend Sailing Race
The Memorial Day Weekend Sailing Race will take place at 9 a.m. Saturday, May 28, weather permitting.
  
There will be two sailboat classes, 22' and above and 30' and above.
  
This is a displacement boating event. Therefore, boats are required to have keeps and a Performance Handicap Racing Fleet (PHRF) rating.
  
All participants are to meet at Lakevue Marina, which is located one mile outside the West Second Street Gate, at 8 a.m. for a Skipper's Meeting to determine the course. The race will start promptly at
9 a.m.
  
Pre-registration is not required, and there is no cost to participate.
