Planning a Dream Wedding at Lakeside
|
"Standing in front of the Gazebo when I was 9 years old, I told my mom, 'This is where I am going to get married,'" said Elizabeth (Adams) Peck.
The first time the Adams family visited Lakeside, was to pick up Elizabeth's brother from the East Ohio Youth Annual Conference in 1993.
The family immediately fell in love with the community and has visited every summer since.
Fast forward, Elizabeth became engaged to Kyle Peck and needed to choose a venue for their special day. Elizabeth's dream of getting married at the Gazebo would now come true.
Lakeside already held a special place in her heart, and adding memories of their wedding made Lakeside a place that will forever be dear to the couple and their family as it continues to grow.
"I wanted to introduce the community to my friends and family and make it a fun weekend event," shared Elizabeth.
The grounds and views along the Lake Erie shore made an excellent backdrop for wedding photos.
"I've always wanted to take pictures at all of my favorite Lakeside spots," she said.
The couple wanted their wedding to be a destination wedding, and the Chautauqua community offered the perfect getaway.Read more...

Retreat Offers Local Pastors the Lakeside Experience
|
Last year, Lakeside Chautauqua hosted the first Fellowship of Locals Pastors & Associate Members Retreat from Aug. 24-26.
As a result of an idea sparked at a Religious Life Advisory Committee meeting, this retreat was a collaborated effort between the Rev. Doug Winner, East Ohio Conference Fellowship of Associate Members & Local Pastors (FAMLP) president; the Rev. David Weaver, West Ohio Conference FAMLP president; the Rev. Dr. Ned Dewire, Lakeside Chautauqua director of Religious Life & Church Outreach; and Shirley Stary, Lakeside Chautauqua vice president of Programming.
Together, they designed a retreat specifically for local pastors of the East Ohio and West Ohio Conferences.
"We found the Lakeside organization and staff so willing to extend their help and services to make this retreat a success," said the Rev. Winner. "It was a blessing to us."
This three-day retreat experience provided nurturing opportunities, such as morning devotionals by the lake, an evening picnic in the park and free-time to be spent exploring Lakeside.
"The group of licensed, local pastors, and the need for them, is growing, so we're creating a retreat experience to provide the spiritual and personal renewal needed to perform this role," commented the Rev. Winner. "It also gives them the opportunity to experience Lakeside and develop skills local pastors need to serve their respective churches."

Florida Chautauqua Assembly Provides a Unique Four-Day Journey
|
In February 1885, leaders of the Chautauqua Assembly of Chautauqua, New York held the first Florida Chautauqua Winter Assembly in DeFuniak Springs, Fla.
The Chautauqua New York leaders wanted to expand their programming into the winter months in a warmer climate.
The Florida Chautauqua Winter Assembly thrived until the 1920s when the Chautauqua Movement experienced a decline.
In 1993, a group of local citizens founded the Florida Chautauqua Center, now doing business as the Florida Chautauqua Association, to revive the Assembly after a 75-year hiatus.
The Florida Chautauqua Assembly is the only remaining Chautauqua in Florida, of the many that were prospering in Florida during the late 1800s and early 1900s.
Similar to the original movement, the program focuses on education, art, recreation and religion.
In 2008, Chris Mitchell became president of the Florida Chautauqua Assembly and launched the first themed assembly, A Journey into the American Presidency.
"The program is very concentrated on the theme of the year," said Mitchell. "Your mind is really on a journey about a specific topic for four days."
