  • Jan 2013 - Lift chairs subject to GST/HST - how to avoid taxes

Greetings!

Safety is always our primary concern - for both the client and the caregiver. Ceiling track lifts are a great example of a win-win. Using a ceiling track makes life easier for the client and the caregiver. In a recent study by WorkSafeBC, injuries dropped by 22% as a result of the use of ceiling tracks!

The most common reason caregivers cited for not using ceiling lifts was  "Not having enough lifts". Our objective is to make it easy, quick and affordable for power lifts to be used by all caregivers.

In this issue, we introduce Monty Pownall, SelfCare's Ceiling Track Specialist. We provide an overview of our Ceiling Track Program, and update you on a few floor lifts that are on sale. We also fill you in on the new regulation of applying GST/HST to lift chairs.

At the beginning of January, we compiled a list of all the Reference Sheets and Product Features provided in 2012. We realize it makes this enewsletter very long... but, for ease of reference, we added the list to the bottom in case you missed the earlier enewsletter.

Please contact us at any time if you have any comments, questions or topics you want covered by an inservice by emailing kim.mackie@selfcarehome.com.

Still need to rent a floor lift? Yes, we are still keeping some RPA 450s and RPS 350s in our rental pool.
Avoiding GST/HST on Lift Chairs

Effective January 2013, lift chairs will be taxable for GST/HST.

However, no tax is charged if the client has a Written Order from a health care professional.

It is important to note that: "The condition may be the result of an injury or a neuromuscular disorder such as muscular dystrophy or multiple sclerosis, or may result from conditions such as cerebral palsy, paraplegia, amputation, pulmonary disease, heart disease, arthritis, diabetes, and back disorders."

SelfCare has produced a simple form for health care professionals to fill in and send to us so that your client's purchase does not have GST or HST added to the price.
