April Meeting Report
Our April meeting was hosted by SDSU Associated Students' Campus Community Commission (CCC), in the beautiful new Conrad Prebys Aztec Student Union. Prior to the meeting, attendees were treated to a tour of the building. After the tour, coffee and cake were provided by the CCC, which is charged by Associated Students with building good relations with the surrounding community.
The first order of business at the meeting was election of CACC/CACPB officers for the 2015-16 fiscal year ending March 31, 2016. The new officers are:
President/Chair - Jose Santos Reynoso
VP/Vice Chair - Rhea Kuhlman
Secretary - Jerry Pollack
Treasurer - Terry Shirley
We then heard a presentation from CACC Beautification Committee member Ian Stenehjem regarding a possible mural for the unsightly gunnite retaining wall on the south side of Montezuma at approximately 55th Street. Ian has been working for the past year with students in SDSU's undergraduate Graphic Design program to develop ideas for the mural. The students were given guidelines to incorporate the rich history of the College Area and its many neighborhoods into the design, to not only beautify the wall, but to celebrate the community. Eight outstanding designs were submitted by teams of students from the Art 454 Environmental Graphic Design class for the Beautification Committee's consideration. The winning design was submitted by the team of Catherine Iannizzotto and Sarah Calagna. At the meeting, a slideshow showing elements of the design was accompanied by an explanation by Catherine of the thinking behind the work.
The CACC voted to authorize further investigation into the legal issues, liability issues, and cost of the proposed mural, which would combine mosaics and paint in a mixed media project. Elements from the other design submittals will be considered for other locations in the College Area.
Also at the meeting, the board voted to submit a letter to Councilmember Emerald requesting that possession and consumption of alcohol be banned in Montezuma Park, the one acre pocket park directly across from The Language Academy. The location across from an elementary school is not appropriate for alcohol consumption, and people consuming alcohol have created problems for the Best Western Lamplighter Inn on El Cajon Boulevard, which backs on to the park, both in terms of damage to the hotel itself, and by creating noise and an unsavory atmosphere. The next step is for Councilmember Emerald, who supports the ban, to send a request to the City Attorney. Full Council action will be required in order to ban alcohol at the park.
An information item on the CACC Annual Audit was continued until next month, since the audit was not ready. The proposal for student apartments at 5030 College Avenue was also continued, since the developer was not ready to present.
