New Personnel in Eastern Division Command Staff for College Area

At our most recent meeting of CARPUS (the College Area Public Safety group), we welcomed new Eastern Division command staff to the College Area. Captain Bernie Colon has replaced Captain Doran as head of the Eastern Division, and we were honored to have him at the meeting. Cap-tain Colon has worked in the College Area before, and is himself a San Diego State University alum, so he is quite familiar with the specific problems in the College Area.

Replacing Lt. Duane Voss, who started the invaluable monthly CARPUS meet-ings last year in response to community questions

about some police practices in the College Area, is Lt. Paul Phillips. Lt. Phillips has worked most recently in the Pacific Beach area, where, he noted wryly, "they've been known to have a few parties." His previous experience should prove to be valua-ble preparation for the College Area.

It was also announced that Sgt. Dean Thomas, who has long served the College Area, first as Community Relations Officer and then as super-vising sergeant of the College Area's much loved "C Squad", which typical-ly handles party calls in the College Area, has been transferred, and is being replaced by Sgt. Shane Martin. Sgt. Martin was not at the meeting, due to his training schedule, but we look forward to meeting him at an upcoming CARPUS get-together.

We didn't get an opportunity to get to know Capt. Doran, who was in his position for just a few months, but to

Sgt. Dean Thomas and Lt. Duane Voss, we offer our heartfelt thanks for a job well done, and best wishes for their future work with the San Diego Police Depart-ment. They truly exemplified "community policing" at its best.
