Read and Dream News

The Read and Dream Team has been busy stocking book shelves with new books after a trip to the Scholastic warehouse sale in December, so make sure to turn in your Read and Dream logs every month and check out our new selection of books on awards day.

A large number of Strandwood students are proud members of the Read and Dream Team and we would like to congratulate them all on their continued efforts to log their minutes and turn their logs in at the end of each month.

We would like to give all students the opportunity to suggest books for the Read and Dream Team to purchase throughout the year. So, in the future, any student can write a book purchase suggestion on their pink reading log before turning it in at the end of each month. We may not be able to purchase all the books suggested due to our budget, but would still appreciate all suggestions.

We would like to thank the PTA for funding our annual budget, and all the families who continually donate books to our program.

Mad Science Starting in February
Eureka! The Inventors' Academy

Inventing means curiosity, practicality, necessity, cooperating and dreaming! Join us as we take students on a historical journey with a hands-on approach learning about some of the worlds' greatest inventors, from Leonardo da Vinci to Tesla, to Thomas Edison to the Wright Brothers. We challenge our class to use their imaginations and creativity to survive on a deserted island by designing devices to capture food and water: building bridges, shelters and even a boat to make it off the island. We will put our heads together to imagine the future in space focusing on creating inventions to protect spaceships from damaging space rays, and designing a safety capsules for payloads returning from space. These are only a few examples...come discover and create!

Dinner Dance Auction News
Tickets on sale now!

Ticket sales for this year's Dinner Dance Auction are open! To purchase tickets, go to: http://www.biddingforgood.com/strandwood. Tickets are $55 each until March 1st or until they sell out. Any tickets remaining after March 1st will be $65 each.

Want to donate to the auction? We have reached out to over 600 local and national organizations and have already received a number of great donations. We have found, however, that the best donations come from within our school community. There are literally hundreds of ways to help: rental houses, timeshares, airline miles, professional services, baked goods...and that's just to name a few.

If you are ready to donate or have questions, please contact Molly McCabe: president@strandwoodpta.org. In order to be included, we need your donation by March 1, 2015. Thank you!

QUESTIONS REGARDING ANY OF STRANDWOOD's AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS? CONTACT:  vpprograms@strandwoodpta.org

IMPORTANT! Each of these programs needs a parent volunteer
(except Girls on the Run). In order for these programs to take place, we need a parent volunteer to be present at the program sessions (no participation necessary, just be present in case of emergency and to help oversee things). The volunteer parent must be: 1) PTA Member (Pd. PTA Dues of $7.50) and 2) cleared through the district (TB Tested and fingerprinted). Please email vpprograms@strandwoodpta.org if you can help. If a program doesn't have a parent volunteer, that program will be cancelled.

Nutcracker Clothing Returns
The Nutcracker Closet was a great success again this year. We received lots of donations and many families were able to borrow needed items. If you did borrow something from the closet please launder the item, if appropriate, and return it to the Nutcracker Closet collection box outside the MUR. If you have items you would like to donate, those can also be placed in the box as well. We are collecting any items that are used for the basic costumes. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Alexandra Kemp at nutcrackercloset@strandwoodpta.org.
