Book Fair Volunteers Needed

We invite you to visit our Scholastic Book Fair and experience a celebration of reading that provides families the opportunity to get involved in a universal mission: encouraging kids to read every day so they can lead better lives. This is an event that brings a wonderful selection of fun, engaging, and affordable books kids want to read. The more kids practice reading, the better they'll get. We hope you will join us in the library! Please Click Here to sign up as a volunteer.

The support group for parents of kids with dyslexia continues to meet the first Monday of the month. Our next meeting will be April 7th at 8:30am in the Plaza Room of Church of the Resurrection, 399 Gregory Lane. All parents of children with language-learning difficulties and interested educators are invited. Contact Amanda Szakats for more information.

Spring Chess
The current Winter Session of the After-School Chess club ends Wed., March 26th. THERE WILL BE NO CHESS CLUB ON WED., APRIL 2ND.

The Spring Session begins April 9th & registration is open! It's taught by Berkeley Chess School on Wednesdays after school at Strandwood. Chess is fun and can be learned quickly and easily. Studies have found that chess helps improve test results in reading, science, and math, and produces growth in critical cognitive skills. Beyond academia, chess influences social behavior including self-esteem, respect, patience, and good sportsmanship. And did we mention...it's FUN! Boards and sets are provided for our classes. The minimum class size is 10; maximum is 20.

5th Grade Yearbooks

Each year the 5th grade class receives a yearbook to commemorate their time at Strandwood. In order to make sure we include every student, we need help from 5th grade families. How can you help?  We are collecting photos of your students from their K-5 years here at Strandwood. If you've got photos from class parties, spirit days, scouts, talent shows, Nutcracker, Outdoor Ed, chorus/band, halloween parades or any candids from along the way we'd love to see them. Please put photos onto a CD/flash drive (marked with your name so we know who to return it to) and place it in the Yearbook basket in the office or hand it to Kristy Safarians. You may submit photos now through April 18th.

The yearbook will contain a Dedication section and student surveys. Dedications are optional but are also a nice way to send a special message to your 5th grader or their 5th grade teacher. A $5 cash donation can be given in the office along with your dedication form. The student surveys were handed out in the yearbook packet. Our goal is to have every 5th grader complete this survey. The dedications, dedication donations, and student surveys are due in the Yearbook basket by April 18th.

Each year the yearbook cover is designed by one of our talented 5th graders. Please encourage your artists to submit artwork for consideration for this year's cover. Instructions for the artwork were provided in your yearbook packet this week, titled "Cover Contest".

CORRECTION FOR DEADLINE TO DROP OFF COVER ART FOR 5TH GRADE YEARBOOK: Please note, the due date reflected in the packet is incorrect. The deadline for submitting Cover artwork is now FRIDAY APRIL 11th, 2014!  Please encourage your 5th grade artist to submit their cover art work to the basket in the office by that date. If you have any questions please feel free to contact Amy Leimpeter or Amy Farajian.

Lastly, we are also accepting donations ($15 cash) to defray the cost of the yearbook. If you choose to donate, this can be turned into the Yearbook basket in the office. Donations will be accepted through April 18th.

Thank you for your support in helping to create this special keepsake to commemorate our years at Strandwood.
