Looming for Life Update
Thank you to all who made bracelets!
Thank you so much to everyone who supported our Looming for Life program. What amazing students we have at this school!! We received so many beautiful bracelets, and Sofia and Kennedy were very proud to deliver them to George Mark Hospital in San Rafael, Children's Hospital in Oakland, and John Muir Hospital in Walnut Creek. They were all so appreciative of everyone's hard work.
Strandwood Students Learn About Two American Greats in FAME: Scott Joplin and Jackson Pollock

This month, FAME (Fine Arts Mini Lesson) docents presented lessons on Scott Joplin and Jackson Pollock. Scott Joplin (1867-1917) was an African American composer who was considered the "King of Ragtime." Musicians would "rag" a piece of music to jazz it up with irregular rhythms. Students learned about one of the main characteristics of ragtime, syncopation, in which different beats are emphasized or skipped. Ragtime was a precursor to jazz, and Joplin's famous piece, "Maple Leaf Rag," was the first sheet music to become a greatest hit, selling over one million copies. The art portion of the lesson focused on the famous American artist, Jackson Pollock (1912 - 1959). Pollock was known for his unique splatter paintings and was instrumental in putting abstract expressionism (art guided by feelings) on the map in the 1940s and for making New York City the new center for art instead of Europe. Students viewed one of Pollock's splatter paintings, a composition entitled "Waterbirds," and learned about Pollock's unorthodox methods for painting canvases on the floor.
There's DRAMA at Strandwood...!
By Renee Penegor
I am excited to introduce STAGE PLAY, a new after-school drama class for Strandwood kids, grades 1 - 5. STAGE PLAY aims to spark creativity, build theatre skills and grow your child's confidence. Using theatre games & activities to explore the Actor's tools (imagination, voice, body) we will become an ensemble and create a show together, with a focus on process, from improvisation and scriptwriting to performance. A nurturing, positive environment will encourage creative risk-taking and above all we will have fun! Our last class will be a performance for family & friends. No prior theatre experience is necessary.

DATES: March 12th - May 21st
DAYS: Every Wednesday from 12:30pm - 2pm
LOCATION: Strandwood (dates & room location TBD)
COST: $150/student (siblings get 20% discount)

A parent volunteer is required for this program and if you are interested in this position, your child's fee for the class is waived. Questions or to enroll, please contact reneepenegor@hotmail.com.
