FAME Needs You!
Sign up NOW to be a Docent!

INFORMATIONAL MEETING NEXT WEEK

We invite you to come find out more about FAME next Tuesday, September 17th, in the music room (B-5) immediately following drop-off. We'll explain how FAME works and what docents do.

WHAT is FAME?

FAME stands for Fine Arts Mini Experience and is a PTA-sponsored program that introduces every student at Strandwood to a different composer and artist, once a month for six months, through fun, interactive lessons. This is one of the most beloved and popular programs Strandwood offers. Let's keep the arts alive!

WHO teaches FAME?

Our docents are parent volunteers. Teams of two parents (one art, one music) teach short art and music lessons to their child's class in the music room. No prior experience is necessary!

HOW is FAME done?

Lesson plans are given to docents at meetings the first Tuesday of the month, then docents give short lessons (10 - 20 minutes per parent) to classes in the music room (which contains simple props, prints of famous paintings, costumes, and a CD player). All lesson plans are written out for you, and you have flexibility to use, edit, or adapt as you wish! Docents learn about art and music alongside the kids, and it is rewarding for everyone.

WHEN is FAME?

Schedules are distributed for one-hour docent meetings the first Tuesday of the month, then docents teach one or more classes (grades K-5) on one of the remaining three Tuesdays. FAME runs October through April, skipping December.

WHY do we need you?

Art and music are so important to a child's education, but with budget cuts, schools need parent volunteers more than ever. Every year Strandwood retains and recruits parent volunteers who have an hour or two each month to donate to their child's class.

If you are interested in being a FAME docent, please contact Program Coordinator Martha Alexander at alexander9@aol.com. If you are interested in being on a committee for coordinating simple props/sets for FAME lessons, please contact Set Coordinator Alison Clary at alisonclary@sbcglobal.net. Thank you!

Attention 4th and 5th Graders!

Is your child in 4th or 5th grade?

Do they want to learn how to play an instrument?

Strandwood's After-School Beginner Band is the perfect place for your student to learn how to play and perform with a group. Taught by Robin Eig, owner of Rockin' Robbies/East Bay Music in Concord, Strandwood's After-School Beginner Band is a fun and supportive environment in which to learn.

Beginner Band will be on Tuesdays from 2:50pm - 3:50pm (directly after school dismissal) from October 1 through May 20. The cost is $300 (just $10 per class!). Instruction is held in the B-5 Music Room.

Box Tops Update

Attention Attention!!! Our Box Tops program is underway and we have already received tons of Box Tops! Thanks to all who have brought them in.

This week, someone turned in a very large ziploc bag filled with Box Tops but there was no name on the bag. We want to make sure that the student who turned them in gets credit and entered in to the monthly prize and the end of the year class prize. If the bag belongs to you, would you kindly send an email to vpways@strandwood.org so your student can get credit?

Please make sure your child's name is on all submissions. Thanks!!

Spanish at Strandwood

Would your child like to learn Spanish? Viva el Espanol of Lafayette has been offering Spanish after school at Strandwood for several years. We would like to invite you to visit their site ( http://www.vivaelespanol.org/)  to see if this would be of interest to your child(ren). You may register online or contact Tori Meline, AVP of Programs at trmeline@gmail.com with questions.

Spanish classes will be held on campus after school. Classes will start once enrollment meets the minimum participation requirements and you will be notified of the class date and time via email.

Gracias,

Strandwood PTA
