Logan: "Mom, can you buy me that toy to play with?"

Me: "No - it's junk."

Logan: "But Mom, playing is nurturing."

Me thinking: "Don't laugh. Resist. Don't buy it. But he was so clever just then. He's using what he knows about you to get what he wants. Manipulate me? No. But what if he is? Where did he learn it? Was it that new kid in his class? Why did I tell him to be so nice to the new kid?"

Protective factor: Social and Emotional Competence of Children

We started fostering animals when my son was 8-years-old, my daughter was 6-years-old and my youngest son was 2-years-old. The first litter of kittens opened up countless conversations about homeless animals and humans, but it also sparked conversations about spay and neuter programs to maintain population control, how to stretch resources and the importance of reusing items (such as empty toilet paper rolls for cat toys, cardboard boxes for forts, etc), empathy...the list goes on and on.
