CONCORD - Governor Maggie Hassan will honor 28 parents from across the Granite State as part of N.H.'s Parent Recognition Month in February.

Governor Hassan joins New Hampshire Children's Trust for the 6th Annual Unsung Heroes Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, February 19 at 4:30 p.m. at the N.H. State House.

Honorees are parents who overcame challenges and are role models for their children and community.

In the past 5 years, the N.H. Children's Trust honored 147 parents in partnership with the Governor's office.  Once again, the Governor will join the N.H. Children's Trust to present the Unsung Hero awards.

Nominees may be a biological parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, foster or adoptive parent.  Nominations are accepted through January 31, and the nomination form can be found at www.NHChildrensTrust.org/event/unsung-hero-awards.

The selection committee will review nominations searching for evidence that parents demonstrate a strong understanding of the five Protective Factors and are viewed as role models in their families and communities.  Protective factors are the foundation of the nationally promoted Strengthening Families Approach. This research-based, cost-effective strategy is used to increase family strengths, enhance child development and reduce child abuse and neglect.

Each honoree will receive a framed certificate, a photo of their recognition and a gift bag with items donated by local businesses. Event sponsorship opportunities are available.

Click here for the nomination form posted on our website or simply write a letter, due by January 31, stating

1.) Qualities you admire about this person.

2.) Why this person is a role model to their family and others.

As N.H. Children's Trust considers the Unsung Heroes, the parents who are role models for families and their communities, they assume the five Protective Factors are solid in their lives. Protective factors are the foundation of the nationally promoted Strengthening Families Approach. This research-based, cost-effective strategy is used to increase family strengths, enhance child development and reduce child abuse and neglect.

PROTECTIVE FACTORS include:

  • Parental resilience: "I can overcome hard times and bounce back."
  • Social connections: "I have people who know and support me."
  • Knowledge of parenting and child development: "I know where to go to find out about parenting skills and my child's developmental growth."
  • Concrete support in times of need: "I know where to turn to for help."
  • Social and emotional competence of children: "I know how to help my children talk about their feelings."

5 Protective Factors
