Color is the key to the subconscious.
- Carl Jung
Your color preferences can tell you a lot about yourself (your thoughts, feelings, personality, preferences, state of mind, challenges and more). And the colors you wear each day tell a story to the world (how you are feeling, what you might be working through).
Not long ago I had a conversation with a young woman who had been locked into wearing purples. She could not bring herself to wear anything else. After speaking with me for a while, she told me her husband had suddenly passed away recently.
When I told her that purple helps people through the grieving process, tears welled up in her eyes, as if someone finally really saw her and what she was going through.
We had a lovely, open conversation about her thoughts and feelings. As we said our goodbyes, she was smiling, "I think I might be able to wear another color now once in a while. I feel so much lighter. I feel as if I want to wear yellow."
Yellow is the complement of purple, and it is not unusual for people to gravitate to the complementary color to help create energetic balance. What was remarkable is that this young woman understood so quickly how purple had assisted her and accompanied her on her journey of grief, and how she instantly knew through her intuition what color came next.
Color therapy doesn't prescribe what to wear or what color to work with. So you can't make really a mistake, and that takes a lot of angst out of the process.
If you feel hesitation or don't yet trust your intuition, please use a good color reference book. Of course I recommend my Simply Color, Second Edition, but there are many others as well. A good book will help you understand what color families will do for you and will give you ways to use them.
Or you can visit the color sprays page on my website to get information about what each color can help with.
Or you can purchase the Simply Color Card Deck, which also lists helpful, useful information about color, including practical suggestions for ways to bring color into your surroundings right away, and affirmations that offer ongoing support and encouragement.
