"Don't just stay with a good staffing firm, demand a great one. Not only will it alleviate a lot of the pain of hiring, it will make you and your company better. Because with a great partnership, you can just call and say, "Get me another person!" and they know exactly what you are looking for. And the person is perfect."

Why not use this day to schedule something fun and different for your family? How about stand-up paddleboarding or canoeing?

Now or Later

Chris Cochran, Director

If you're thinking you'd be happier in another position at a different company, you should wait until some time later to do something about it. Your reasoning for wanting to leave makes sense to your family and friends, but they'll only encourage you to do something about it now.

If you haven't updated your resume in a year or four, you should do it later. You'll need it when requested by a company expressing interest in you, but they'll understand that you'll get it to them later. Meantime, they're happy to talk with you now.

If you've heard that there's a search firm that specializes in creative, don't get too excited. Just because you've reached out and they've expressed interest in meeting with you, it doesn't mean they'll have a new job for you right away - that's true. That's okay, though, because I've heard that recruiters will find you (very easily) when they have the right job for you. Sit back and wait because it will be that much sweeter when it comes to pass.

When you need to hire someone right now, remember that the best candidates always surface later in the process. The people you get in the first few months that are interested are too eager. Let it simmer. It's a game you're playing.

Big rule for hiring the right person: never bring in outside support. At least not right away. Your hiring team needs to spin their wheels just a bit to get a feel for the search. Bring in the specialists later.

Now, you know none of this is true. Later, you'll want to have done something sooner to have had greater success.
