Do You Own Your Job or Are You Just Renting?

Kristen Harris, COO * Co-Founder

Professional Wellness

Chris Cochran, Director

Are you doing enough to ensure the health of your career? Workplace wellness programs are devised to improve you and your family's health while reducing health-related costs. If you apply this same principle to your career, it means that you are focusing on career improving behaviors that will result in advancement now and later.

1. Keep your resume current. You're going to need an updated resume when you really want it - when you receive a request to send it to a contact at your desired new employer. The challenge of producing a resume that you're pleased with becomes much more difficult if you have to start from scratch.

2. Go on interviews. One of the top writers in town was telling me that the best piece of advice that they had ever received came from the boss they liked the most - this boss told them to go on three interviews per year to stay current with the employment marketplace and to have the ability to take on exciting new work if it presented itself. It also provided the benefit of understanding how good, or bad, they had it at their current company.

3. Network. Get out in the community and meet people. We've all heard that it's "who" you know that will be the best tool for gaining a new job. You need people to know you so that they can promote you to others. That only happens if you get out of the confines of your cubby hole. Think of networking as an opportunity that's about to happen. If you don't have success, go to another one because that's where the opportunity lies.

4. Work hard at your current job while you conduct your search. Maintaining a consistent excellence is the mark of a pro. You'll thank yourself for your dedication to the people you're working with now and the commitment you showed yourself, family and friends as you pursued a bigger, better role with another organization. Also, take on additional projects at your current job that will expand your skill set which will make you more marketable.

5. Have a relationship with a recruiter. A conversation with a reputable recruiter who specializes in what you do (advertising, marketing, design, communication) can make a huge impact on the types of roles and companies that you will be introduced to and come your way. We're good - contact us! (You saw that coming, right?)

These five efforts, or habits, will improve the condition of your career and result in a more desirable state of employment.
