Holiday Know-How: Treat Business Networking Like A Family Gathering

Kristen Harris, COO * Co-Founder

"During the event it's good to break up your time between talking to people you know well, getting to know new guests, and catching up with people you haven't seen for a while. And, just like any family party, remember that people like to talk about themselves."

Serendipity

Chris Cochran, Director

You never saw it coming...but, because you went to the event you saw that I posted; because you were inspired by your co-worker who got the job you knew was a stretch for her; because you went out for that drink with that group of people; because you picked up the phone when it rang; because you replied to the email that you wouldn't have normally bothered with; because you said "no;" because you said "yes;" because you were curious - your life changed when we first met.

I see people experience success on a daily basis because of what they thought at the time was just a little something that they felt they should do. Then, weeks later, they have a new job. Score one for serendipity. As part of their thanks, they inevitably talk about a particular moment..."but, because I connected with you on LinkedIn;" "because I went ahead with the meeting anyway;" "because you remembered that I had been a writer at the beginning of my career;" "because you made sure I got your message;" "because you followed-through;" "because your client asked you if you knew anyone who might happen to have my specialized skill - my life changed." That's how it happens.

Your career and the people you meet all tie wonderfully together to form pleasant surprises.

Green Tip

Buy a Cut Christmas Tree

Nearly all cut Christmas trees are grown on tree farms - which means their stock is replenished yearly and forests aren't depleted. Cut Christmas trees are a much greener choice than artificial trees, which are made with petroleum-based materials and often shipped thousands of miles before they reach your living room. Unlike artificial trees, which eventually end up in the landfill, cut trees can be recycled after the holidays.

The city of Columbus offers a free tree pick up service (and turns the trees into mulch). Visit 311.columbus.gov/colorday
There are also drop off locations where you can take your tree if you miss the pickup.
