Following Up on Your Interview: Ten Steps to Leaving a Good Impression

Kristen Harris, COO * Co-Founder

"By following up in a planned and polite way, you can use your excitement and eagerness to make a great impression with the potential employer. On the flip side, following up too often, too soon, or not at all can be a real negative in your job search."

What's It Like Out There?

Chris Cochran, Director

Companies are hiring. Companies are putting their opportunities on hold. Companies are expected to get back to you shortly with the news you've been waiting for since your interview two days ago. Did you see the good news about Small Company X? Did you hear that Big Company Y unfortunately laid off ten people the other week? It's possible that I will hear all of the above in a single week. It's also most likely that someone who is considering starting a job search will ask me in that same week, "What's it like out there?"

The person who is asking the question is hoping to hear me say, "It's great! Are you kidding me?!" I know my positive outlook isn't going to necessarily kick-start your search. You've heard both the good and the bad like me, I suppose. Don't let the stories stop you - start your search!

You're an excellent candidate, so it's always "great" out there. Companies ARE hiring people like you. Your attitude about the employment marketplace must be positive. Sharpen the tools you'll need for your search by creating an effective resume that focuses on your success stories. Prepare for the interview by having a thorough understanding of who you are, the things you've accomplished, and your success stories at the ready to apply to any number of questions that may get thrown your way. You should also talk with an executive recruiter (you knew that was inevitable).

Believe it's possible to secure the job of your dreams in our current economic environment. It's great out there...for someone like you! Are you kidding me?!
