We'd like to welcome the newest member of Portfolio Creative, Patrick Butler. Partick is our always smiling Receptionist and Administrative Assistant and we're thrilled to have him on our team.

Our Philanthropy Committee, Creative Next, is still collecting computer equipment for the kids at Run the Race Club. This organization provides after-school and Saturday programs to inner-city young people. With your used laptop, tablet or printer donation, over 150 kids will be able to learn web design skills and do their homework. Read more about Run the Race, our drive and how to participate here.

CCAD's Annual Student Exhibition is one of the college's longest running traditions. Selections are drawn from all nine undergraduate disciplines. This exhibit is free and open to the public.

Three places you'd take an out-of-town guest?

1. Curio - for drinks. The bartenders are so fun and friendly. The drinks are old-fashioned and interesting. And, STRONG! Two drinks are plenty.
2. Basi Italia - on the back patio for appetizers. I'm a sucker for string lights, so I love the atmosphere there.
3. The Scioto Mile. Great views of Columbus, and I think the bridge is pretty cool.

 

What is your perfect Saturday?

Sunshine + swimming + boating + family + friends + drinks + games + music + dancing + lots of laughing.

Favorite album of all time?

No idea. I listen to Pandora. Motown stations are my favorite.

 

Your one 'guilty pleasure' tv show?

That show, Intervention, where they follow a story of someone's addiction. I get so hooked on their stories and am always rooting so hard for the person to turn their life around. I'm so emotionally invested that I'm crying throughout the show. I'm in a great mood at the end of the show if the person overcomes their struggles. I get WAY too wrapped up in it. It's my version of a man rooting for his sports team! My sister/roommate thinks I'm insane.

 

Favorite book or author?

I love Dr. Seuss books. I grew up on them as a child. They may be kid's books, but they're still brilliant. Oh, and whoever wrote those Amelia Bedelia books! They were awesome and hilarious. Amelia Bedelia always reminded me of my nutty mom.

What was your first job?

I grew up near Grand Lake St. Marys, and I worked at the local marina. I had to help fill tubes with air and sell bait - worms and minnows. I thought they were disgusting. I was always (and still am) scared of fish. 

 

Favorite movie?

Maybe a tie between Back to the Future or the Sound of Music. I have like a million brothers and sisters, and we would line up like the Von Trapp children as kids and scream out our names; we'd just be singing and dancing all over the place.

 

Favorite travel destination?

If we're talking places I've traveled to frequently, I'd say Chicago. It's a big city within driving distance - tons of great bars, restaurants and neighborhoods. However, if quantity doesn't count, I did get the opportunity to go to Rome once. That was unreal; I'd love to return.

The country/city you'd most like to visit?

I'm dying to go to Santorini, Greece. I've never been. I somehow came across images of this place, and it's breathtaking. Google image it. It's awesome.

 

Something people would be surprised to know about you?

I'm super competitive when it comes to any type of game - connect four, card games, backyard wiffle ball. I play to win. It's bad.

Where do you shop?

I love name brands, but I also love sales. So...I find it thrilling to score great stuff at TJ Maxx. I'm a sucker. As soon as I see the original price vs. the TJ Maxx price on the tag, I'm like, "who cares how much it costs, it's $200 cheaper than the original price!!!"

 

Favorite quote?

"The only people for me are the mad ones, the ones who are mad to live, mad to talk, mad to be saved, desirous of everything at the same time, the ones who never yawn or say a commonplace thing, but burn, burn, burn like fabulous yellow roman candles exploding like spiders across the stars." -Jack Kerouac

Favorite food?

Anything with cilantro in it!!! Strangely, I used to hate it. I would force my poor sister make me my own special batch of homemade salsa without it, but now I can't resist anything made with the stuff. I usually ask for extra.

 

Three things you can't live without?

Dance parties. Polished nails. Pentel RSVP pens - only the ones labeled FINE!

 

If I wasn't a recruiter I'd be......

For a rewarding job, I'd do something with kids...be a teacher, work at an orphanage or something really feel-good. For an out-there, dream job that would just be a blast...I'd be on a variety show or broadway production. Sadly, I'm a terrible singer, so working with kids is more plausible. :)

 

Out & About

You can put together separate pieces that you also wear with other outfits, but when you get a call for an interview there should be no 'what should I wear' panic."

Agility Leads To Your Success

AAF Columbus (formerly known as AdFed) had their monthly luncheon in April and featured a star panel of local agency leaders addressing the topic: Changing Advertising - Staying Ahead of a Dynamic Industry. Interesting perspectives were shared and several common themes came out of the discussion. One in particular felt unique to the executive search space and it was what Carey Schmitt, Partner & Chief Client Officer from Ologie said when stating a key to success is "agility."

 

Agility, according to Wikipedia, requires the integration of isolated movement skills using a combination of balance, coordination, speed, reflexes, strength and endurance. If you're a candidate searching for your next opportunity, are you executing your search with agility? 

 

Balance comes into play when your priorities are up against one another. Keeping fully engaged with your current company while providing the necessary information and dedicated thought, for that matter, to another company offering a position of interest is necessary. Coordination means working with the recruiter and providing them with the information they need to present you in the best light. Sharing of information increases your chance of success. Speed can often be the differentiating factor between you getting the job or not. Someone else may have simply moved faster on an opportunity. Reflexes play a part in the interview process and how you handle unexpected questions. 

 

Understand who you are and practice your responses to the expected questions. If you're prepared, your reflexive response will be appropriate. Strength and endurance come into play because it's not easy putting yourself out there for evaluation by others and your value and self-worth can be challenged by a pessimistic interviewer. Stay confident, strong and be ready for a long game...that just might be what it takes.
