Are You Ready?

A resume is a requirement that everyone needs to ultimately produce at one point or another during their job search. A friend may be able to get you "in," but their boss or the hiring manager you don't know is going to want to see something about you. You may have a nice conversation with the Executive Recruiter who you thought you'd check out, but they are going to be asked by every client of theirs for your resume. Nothing happens without that document describing your career. Opportunities come from all sorts of places and at times that don't meet your timeline exactly. Start writing your resume now. Update it now. You're going to need it when you want it.
While you're working on the resume, update your LinkedIn profile, too. Everything people read and hear about you build your personal brand. A strong LinkedIn profile should reflect your career experiences the way your resume does, but it should also hopefully include recommendations and endorsements. There are a number of other features that can help you tell the story of you. Job hint: have the story of you figured out before talking with anyone about your career.
If you're in a position to hire people or make recommendations for hiring (which could be for your team, which means I'm talking to you), share those names with your manager or have them at the ready if people are wondering, who's good? There's often not enough time to go find someone for the open position. You need to give yourself a bit of an edge by understanding who you're interested in hiring before you're desperately needing them.
