Opportunity Knocks
Three Tips To Build a Great Team
Catherine Lang-Cline, Owner
Don't let evolving economic and regulatory shifts keep you from building a great team. Think differently and you'll be able to get top talent. Here are three tips:
1. Don't be fooled by high unemployment rates. Candidates with special skills are in high demand. If you want rock stars on your team, make your offer and your company very appealing. Be sure to think beyond the paycheck. Ideal candidates are looking for flexibility and a great culture just as much as a competitive salary.
2. Keep the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act in the foreground when hiring. A method that is growing in popularity is building teams using full-time and part-time employees, as well as temps and independent contractors in order to manage new healthcare costs and requirements. Go beyond entry-level employees when hiring contingent labor. You can plug in a pro as needed, as professionals and executives also want more lifestyle flexibility. Referred to as "super temps," executives and professionals are now available short- or long-term, which means you can afford to hire stellar talent.
3. When using contingent labor, be informed on properly classifying them. This includes interns. Governmental agencies have put resources behind making sure companies are in compliance. A staffing company can help you clarify the requirements and can offer your candidates healthcare and other benefits. They can also streamline invoicing and save you time and hassle in finding the perfect person for your team.

Your Career in the New Year: Three Resolutions Worth Keeping
Kristen Harris, Owner
"The creative industry is a tight ecosystem, it always seems like everyone knows everyone else. At your next industry event, make a point of talking to someone you don't know. Interesting conversations happen with people who are different from you. Attend events for your industry, or for another industry you are drawn to."

Negotiating For Happiness
Chris Cochran, Director
You want a new great job. You want more money. You want to be happy. You need to figure out what makes you happy. Put aside the money at this moment. Don't make that face, just do it. Think large. Think small. Everything should be considered. You'll end up making concessions in some way or another, we all do and that includes the company who will be hiring you. You need to know if the company you're considering can provide a framework for your happiness. You need to decide to be happy, the company alone can't do that. No one can do that for you. Ask questions. Listen. Ask even more questions. Talk with your friends. Talk with your family. Talk with your mentor. Everyone can be surprisingly intelligent and have good insight about these things. I know, weird, right? Stop your search if you're angry right now with your current company. Everyone will feel your anger, especially a good recruiter. No one will hire an angry person. Sad also doesn't get hired. People seeking positive changes and those who embrace the excitement of a transition and challenge are understood...and get hired.
They want a new great co-worker. They want to pay you fairly. They want you to be happy. You need to figure out what makes you happy. They have worked to create a role in which they believe someone can be happy. They don't want you to be concentrating on the money. Concentrate on the opportunity. Everyone will be able to figure out your motivation, especially a good recruiter. They need someone with the exact skills they're seeking. They are flexible. They talk amongst themselves. They have someone who likes to play devil's advocate. They will make concessions. I told you they would. They want you to ask questions. They want you to listen. They like that you asked more questions than they suspected you would. They love what they do. Don't you? They want you to be the one.
What you do for a living matters most. The money you get for that living should be acceptable. But, you had already figured out what would make you happy so money wasn't as in play as you thought it might be. The key to negotiating for your happiness is to have figured out what makes you happy before the negotiation begins.
