Wellness Tip

The American Cancer Society is marking the 37th Great American Smokeout on November 15th by encouraging smokers to use the date to make a plan to quit, or to plan in advance and quit smoking that day. By doing so, smokers will be taking an important step towards a healthier life - one that can lead to reducing cancer risk.

Tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the US, yet more than 45 million Americans still smoke cigarettes. However, more than half of these smokers have attempted to quit for at least one day in the past year.

Quitting is hard, but you can increase your chances of success with help. To learn about the available tools, call the American Cancer Society at 1-800-227-2345. You can also find free tips and tools at: American Cancer Society

Raise Your Game

Nobody Hires in December and Other Holiday Myths

Kristen Harris, Owner

"The business world does not shut down for two or three months, and neither should you. Companies have open positions to fill, people leave and need to be replaced, and other roles haven't been filled yet with the right candidate (maybe it's you). Often departments or clients have budget dollars that need to be spent by the end of the year, generating new projects that need people to complete them."

 Nobody Hires in December

Dear Executive Search,

I've had a first interview with a company that really appeals to me. The HR Manager I've met told me their salary range max for the position and it's what I told myself I had to make, no lower. How do I make sure I get what I want and how likely is a company to pay their max?

Signed,

-Maximum

Dear Maximum,

Wait until you see this month's ezine's client-oriented question and answer...you'll freak.  I hope you get what you want, but be prepared to accept less in exchange for positives that you're possibly not currently considering. The company's people and the work they're doing must make it to your final decision checklist. Money is a way some people keep score, but your career is comprised of the opportunities you've experienced and it's those occupations that will lead you to success.

Signed,
-ES

Dear Executive Search
,

My company has initiated a search for an Art Director and we believe we should engage a search firm because we want to ensure we've done everything to get the best. In regards to our salary range, should we assume "the best" will cost us the most (our highest possible number)?

Signed,
-Shallow Pockets

Dear Shallow Pockets,

A search firm should get you "the best" or they're not meeting your expectations. Your salary range should be tethered to reality. You won't necessarily be paying the most for the best if you've done a bit of research and understand what the industry's truly high salary mark represents. Also, realize the best candidates don't solely focus on money. They want to be surrounded by people who want to do great work for clients who are striving to be more successful than their competitors. Find the candidate who has the will to win. I'm drifting into Vince Lombardi territory here...back to your salary range. Be prepared to pay your highest number. However, a successful search firm will deliver on expectations and that can include coming in at a lower number than your max.

Signed,
-ES
