A Surprising Tennessee Geography Lesson

(Excerpts from an article written by Bill Carey, The Tennessee History Guy, in The Tennessee Magazine)

By Kathy Quartermaine

Bill Carey, The Tennessee History Guy, knows all kinds of interesting facts about Tennessee. I recently read an article from him, in The Tennessee Magazine, which revealed some surprising geography facts about Tennessee. I am going to share a couple of those with you here...

Other Than the eight states it borders, the state closest to Tennessee is...

There are eight states that border Tennessee (Kentucky, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas and Missouri). Can you guess which state is the closest to Tennessee besides those it borders?

You might be thinking South Carolina or West Virginia, but that would be wrong.

Other than the eight states it borders, the next-closest to the Volunteer State is Illinois. It is a 46-mile drive from the Obion County community of South Fulton to Cairo, Illinois.

Memphis is much closer to Dallas, Texas, than it is to Mountain City, Tennessee.

Length-wise, Tennessee is much larger than people realize.

It is 450 miles from Memphis to Dallas.

It is 550miles from Memphis to Mountain City, which is the northeastern-most county seat in Tennessee.

(By the way, it is only 375 miles from Mountain City to Washington, D.C.)
