A Special Message and Offer from Tennessee 811

"On Nov. 19th, 1986, it was a chilly morning and a typical work day for me..."

And so began the day that would change Cliff Miedl's life forever, the day he nearly lost his life on an excavation site. Cliff's story of recovery and perseverance following his tragic accident is truly inspiring, from simply learning to walk again, to beating the odds and making the U.S. Olympic Team - twice. It is an important reminder to us all, that accidents can happen to anyone.

Dedication to the goal of safe digging is a shared responsibility...between the excavator, the locator, the facility operators, and Tennessee811, the communications center that connects them. A handful of simple steps can help make your excavation site accident-free, and ensure public safety and the safety of your crew. Because safe digging is often as simple as knowing what's below.

Tennessee811 has PSA's (TV & Radio) featuring Cliff Miedl available for your use. We also have a 10 minute DVD of Cliff's inspiring story.

The PSA's and videos are free; however, we ask that if you tell us how they are being used.

Send that information to Kathy Quartermaine at: kquarter@tennessee811.com

We hope you will try the game and then share it with your friends!

Tennessee 811 Celebrates 6th Annual National Safe Digging Month

As we hope all of you know, this April marks the sixth annual National Safe Digging Month.

Governor Haslam signed a proclamation reminding all Tennesseans to always call 811 at least 3 business days before any digging project.

National Safe Digging Month is formally recognized by the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate and has traditionally earned the support from nearly every state governor across the country.

Striking a single line can cause injury, repair costs, fines and inconvenient outages. Every digging project, no matter how large or small, warrants a call to 811.

By calling 811 to have the underground utility lines in the proposed work area marked, you are making an important decision that can help keep you and your employees safe, protect the underground utilities and keep communities safe and connected.

The depth of utility lines can vary for a number of reasons, such as erosion, previous digging projects and uneven surfaces.

Utility lines need to properly marked because even when digging a few inches, the risk of striking an underground utility line still exists.
