Last year, Clean Power Plants and the EPA proposal to reduce emissions were discussed and debated by a fantastic panel of state experts. Yesterday, President Obama issued an Executive Order to address climate change. A healthy overview of the matter was discussed yesterday on an NPR program. There will be challenges. And, there are strong arguments that this could hurt the economy and consumers. But, Florida is greatly challenged by rising sea levels. Whether this is the best way to address these pressures remains to be seen. But, it is clear, that we must figure out a way to address the sustainability of our coastal cities and residents.

Working on the Green has become the state's premier professional networking and educational forum for sustainability leaders across Florida. Whether you are a business executive leading your corporate social responsibility efforts or are the point person on all things sustainable, no matter the discipline, we have something for you. Government policymakers and administrators get the chance to connect with one another and learn the latest in cutting edge efforts. Academia and non-profit groups can expand their reach working Sustainable Florida partners.

Report Card to Assess Sustainability Leadership

Sustainable Florida serves as a safe and respectful forum for extraordinary leaders in business, non-profit organization, and government to discuss sustainability initiatives throughout Florida. This year, we wanted to get a more accurate look at Florida's progress with sustainability leadership. If the state of Florida is to become a forerunner in sustainability, it must expand the conversation, encourage collaboration, and educate local governments. The Report Card Initiative is our first ever attempt at creating an inventory of sustainability efforts at the county level. We collected data from all 67 counties and used a rubric to assess the quantity and depth of their sustainability actions. The report will serve as a reference guide for counties and open up the sustainability discussion to more incredible players. This will be your chance to compare and contrast your county's plans to others, improve and enhance your county's approach, and learn how to begin sustainability initiatives at the county level. Let's keep the conversation going!

Who is Behind the Effort?

We are pleased to announce that Alexa Green, an intern with our organization, is wrapping up the collection and analysis of county specific detail. Alexa is the type of individual who restores your faith in the next generation. She is incredible and you will get a chance to meet her at Working on the Green Sustainability Summitt where the report will be presented.

Meet Alexa Green - in her own words...."I am a recent graduate from the University of Florida with a B.A. In Sustainability Studies and a B.S. In Psychology. While in high school, I was very active in clubs, sports, and community service. I have always been interested in the South Florida ecosystems and have had an affinity for nature, teaching, and adventure. I have worked as a teacher in Breakthrough Miami and a camp counselor with Camp Live Oak in Oleta Park. At UF, I became an outdoor leader with the Travel and Recreation Program taking college students on backpacking, canoeing, and snorkeling trips to beautiful destinations in Florida, North Carolina, and California. Recently, I worked with Keep Alachua County Beautiful as their Business Management Intern focusing on the logistics for their main event The Great American Cleanup. My passions are traveling, meeting new people, playing volleyball, and discovering what makes me happy. In the future, I want to help others find their place in creating a sustainable society and educate people on the principles of sustainability in a non-threatening way."
