Earth Day. 45 years old. Do you celebrate it? Reminisce? Wonder what the future holds? Take action? What exactly are we to make of something like 'Earth Day'?

Years ago we had the pleasure of hosting John Moran - Florida nature photographer - at a Campus and Community Sustainability Conference. He is a wonderful speaker and amazing photgrapher. John wrote a great op-ed piece to coincide with today's celebration. What would you do if you were king for the day? Or Governor? How would you use the office to shape the sate?

Earth Day is an excellent time to make a few announcements aligned with ensuring a great state.

First, the 2014 Best Practice Award winners are highlighted on our website. They are leaders among leaders. Congratulations!

Second, nominations for the 2015 Best Practice Awards are now being accepted. You have one month to submit your nomination online. Don't miss the May deadline!

And there are couple great events coming up.

Speaking of events, Working on the Green will be held October 1-2 at the Plantation on Crystal River and feature a service project to help clean the river of algae toxic to manatees. You are invited to join us for keynote, plenary panels and the Best Practice Awards!

As always, we continue to update our website calendar and Facebook page with other great events. We invite you to join us.

All the best -

PlaqueSustainable Florida Best Practice Nominations are Open!

Each year, Sustainable Florida works hard to find the best of the best. Those who are leading the way for others. Those who are balancing economic goals with environmental stewardship while caring about social impact - and succeeding.

More than 150 organizations over the last 20 years have been recognized. And what was honored years ago is now considered common business practice. In other words, we keep raising the bar.

There are several divisions and some nominees may be eligible for more than one category. Categories include:

  • Large Business
  • Small Business
  • Government
  • Non-Profit
  • Partnership
  • Green Building
  • Leadership

A new category this year will focus on Community Engagement. This category recognizes Individuals or organizations which have successfully brought together stakeholders, constituents, partners, vendors or customers, etc., to engage in and practice more sustainable practices. Celebrate the efforts that recruit, educate and promote sustainability.

There is a small nomination fee of $110. Non-profits and deserving parties are eligible to apply for a waiver. Feel free to call for more information, but do it soon. Deadline

is Thursday, May 14th.
