Chicago, IL - May 4, 2014
Woman Made Gallery (WMG) is proud to present "Mutations of Otherness," a group exhibition with 21 works by 11 artists. Simultaneously WMG is hosting an invitational exhibition by Shoshanna Weinberger.

Opening Reception: Friday, May 9, 6-9 p.m.

Juried by Shoshanna Weinberger, the "Mutations of Otherness" exhibition includes painting, sculpture, photography, mixed media, and works on paper by Michelle Acuff, Sasha Andruzheychik, Colby Beutel, Lemia Bodden, Logan Brody, Lauren Levato Coyne, Susan Emmerson, Yareth Fernandez, Cheryl Hochberg, Ellie Hunter, and Stefani Quam.
Regarding her installation work (see image), artist Michelle Acuff writes, "My imagery springs from diverse sources, in which actual and mediated visions blur. Fundamentally, I'm interested in how we construct knowledge from landscapes, experience, myth and history, both art historical and natural."
In her statement, Shoshanna Weinberger comments: "Mutations are the raw materials of evolution. Mutations can be a single or collective. A single mutation can have a large effect that over time duplicates to acquire a new function or form. This can provide the basis for adaptive evolution and survival. The artists selected for Mutations of Otherness interpret the context of mutation as organic, biological, physical, psychological, political and surreal." "Mutations of Otherness" is wheelchair accessible.

Simultaneously with the "Mutations of Otherness" group exhibition, WMG presents a body of work with commentary on the cultural history of female presentation and excessive notions of beauty by Shoshanna Weinberger. The drawings presented in "potbelly pin-ups: out of many one," refer to the contemporary connections with and cultural stereotypes of historical women who have been subjugated to modern-day Hottentots.
In her statement Weinberger writes, "As an artist, I find the idea of what popular culture defines as feminine beauty to be skewed and distorted. My drawings identify with beauty psychology, both physiologically and politically. These figures are tangled, hogtied, and wearing props associated with femininity and sexuality...[They] have a sex appeal but decidedly are mutations... potbelly pinups alludes to the trappings and distortion of beauty found in prepubescent pageant toddlers, strippers, Hollywood-icons, West-Indian Dancehall performers, extreme plastic surgery, and even myself."

Woman Made Gallery (WMG) is a tax-exempt, not-for-profit organization founded in 1992. Its goal is to support, cultivate, and promote the diverse contributions of women in the arts through exhibitions and other programs that serve, educate, and enrich our community.
A small staff, interns and volunteers, and a dedicated group of board members and advisers are the heart and soul of the Gallery. WMG relies on membership contributions and individual donations to create the programs that support its mission.
Woman Made Gallery is supported in part by grants from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency; a CityArts Program II grant from the City of Chicago, Department of Cultural Affairs; the Arts Work Fund for Organizational Development, a donor-advised fund of the Chicago Community Trust; the Gaylord and Dorothy Donnelley Foundation; The Efroymson Family Fund, a CICF Fund; a major anonymous donor; and the generosity of its members and contributors.
