"Michele Fitzsimmons at the Art Institute" Photography by Diane J. Schmidt Imaging and Printing by Peter Jones Opening Reception: Friday, September 6, 6-9 p.m.
 | | Photography by Diane J. Schmidt |
"Michele Fitzsimmons at the Art Institute" with Photography by Diane J. Schmidt presents images created at the Art Institute in 1981, in which Michele Fitzsimmons posed nude and Diane J. Schmidt photographed her in various galleries, as she interacted with the artwork and the space. The work is part of a larger collaborative project and accompanying book, 'The Chicago Exhibition', in which Fitzsimmons and Schmidt present nude portraits taken in public locations throughout Chicago.
Edited and printed by Peter Jones, the digital prints in this exhibition are all out-takes. "In some, only minor corrections and cleaning were done. In others, the full force of Photoshop has been used to combine and remake images in the hope that some new light can be cast on that distant afternoon."
Diane J. Schmidt is a writer and photojournalist currently living and working in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She earned her BA in Comparative Literature from Prescott College, a BFA in Photography/Design from Rhode Island School of Design, and an MA in Creative Writing from the University of Mexico. Schmidt is the recipient of numerous awards including a Visual Arts Fellowship in Photography from the National Endowment for the Arts and a Robert R. McCormick SRI fellowship. Peter Jones has a BFA and MFA in printmaking and drawing and has worked as a master printer in traditional printmaking. He has collaborated with Michele on several projects in the past. "Michele Fitzsimmons at the Art Institute" is their latest collaboration. Click here for Press Release / Click here to view the exhibition online.

Poetry Reading
Inspired By: Through The Word-Camera
Sunday, September 15 from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m.
 | | Artwork by Nakeya Brown |
Please join us for a reading at Woman Made Gallery on Sunday, September 15th from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. The event is curated by Nina Corwin: "Some poets say their poems are not "about" anything. Some poems, however are, like photographs, the result of focusing the word-camera on a piece of news, art, profile or object. This is not to say that such poems are merely literal renderings of their subjects. The word photographer makes choices on how to portray or interact with her subject. How to frame the shot, the angle, distance, the filters and special effects. She is free to editorialize. Think Neruda's odes, ekphrastic poems, a poetic sort of photojournalism focused on a current or historical moment, portraits or persona pieces."
Poets presenting their work include Virginia Bell, Brenda Cardendas, Marci Rae Johnson, Dipika Mukherjee, Lana Rakhman, and Christine Rhein.
All events are free and open to the public.
