The "Exquisite Uterus Project" was initiated in the Spring of 2012 in reaction to what is being called the most current 'War on Women.' Fiber artist and educator Alison Gates and Helen Klebesadel decided to offer feminists the opportunity to participate in this collaborative art project to channel some of the rage we were experiencing at the attacks on women's reproductive health in this political environment. Woman Made Gallery hosts over 100 of the 160 plus exquisite uteri created through this project.

Julia Ris studied art at Western Michigan University and the University of Michigan. For many years the complexities and necessities of life and a career as a marketing and digital strategy professional sidetracked her from pursuing artistic endeavors; the death of her beloved Mother in 2011 made her realize that it was time to pursue her dreams. Now, she is committed to following her need to explore and create. As first-prize winner for her painting, "Scaffold," in WMG's May 2011 "Abstractions" exhibition juried by Sandra Perlow, Julia was awarded this solo show.

Nina Corwin and audience

From the exploding popularity of reality television and celebrity culture to the U.S. government's ever-growing presence in our homes, schools, and community spaces through Patriot Act-sanctioned surveillance, the twenty-first century has seen enormous shifts in cultural and political conceptions of what is considered private and what is considered public, both in the United States and world-wide. We as individuals are losing control over what is seen and what is unseen; known and unknown; public and private. How do these shifts manifest in our daily lives? Who is most affected and why? How do poets address these changes, whether through illuminating, embracing or actively working against them?

Curated by Nina Corwin and documented by audio recordist Kurt Heintz, featured readers include Shevaun Brannigan, CM Burroughs, Hope Johnson, Sandra Marchetti, Carrie McGath, and Naomi Palagi.

Please join us for this free event on Sunday, February 3, 2012, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Woman Made Gallery.
