Juror Mary Stoppert included 47 Illinois women artists for Inspired By: Celebrating Illinois Women Artists, whose works illustrate in some manner an artist who served as an inspiration, as evidenced in the included work and statement. The inspiration could have occurred in several different ways: approach to or use of subject matter, process, or use of material and/or technique.

Ms. Stoppert notes, "I am proud of the quality and depth of the women artists of Illinois.  I was impressed with the range of artists and styles that were chosen; I was even more impressed with the artists where this truly inspired a body of work rather than a single piece."

Included are paintings, sculptures, photographs, mixed media works, and installations by Mary Barnes-Gingrich, Millicent Bradleigh, Kathy Chambers, Peggy Dee, Maria Macarena DePersio, Alicia Diamond, Maria Dimanshtein, Alice DuBois, Meredith Dytch, Deb Flagel, Mary Frances, Alexa Frangos, Elizabeth Gadelha, Shelley Gilchrist, Joann Goetzinger, Jessica Gondek, Rita Grendze, Karen Gubitz, Sally Haglund, Pamela Hobbs, Ellen Holtzblatt, Carolyn Cronin Hughes, Raeleen Kao, Mary King, Itala Langmar, Laurie LeBreton, Ramona Dallum Lindsey, Jennifer Macias, Lauren Macklin, Jennifer Moore, Karen E. This exhibition includes new works by Chicago artist Mary Stoppert. "Having been an artist for over thirty years, this recent work has qualities and elements that speak to that experience. Educated as a sculptor, I am naturally attracted to three-dimensional form. I have collected, produced and restored objects over that time period. I have traveled to Latin America to buy and collect ethnographic objects. I cannot always explain what it is that draws me to an object; it speaks to me aesthetically and I respond
.
"

After earning her MFA in Sculpture at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Mary Stoppert taught at Northeastern Illinois University for thirty years, chairing the art department for two years, and serving as gallery director for fifteen years. Stoppert's lengthy exhibition history includes the New Museum in New York, The Art Institute and Museum of Contemporary in Chicago, and nearly all points between.

Stoppert was a founding member of Artemisia Gallery and also the Chicago Women's Caucus for Art. She is the recipient of many awards, including an NEA grant, the Art Institute of Chicago's John G. Curtis Prize and the Frank G. Logan Award. Her work is in many private and public collections, including the Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago), Cincinnati Museum of Art, and the State of Illinois. In addition, Stoppert has served as an instrumental advisor, curator, and mentor to Woman Made Gallery and gallery staff since its inception.

Nina Corwin and audience

Early or late, young or old, past and present. Time engulfs and carries us by seconds, centuries and increments between. If we can't keep up, we fall behind. We are influenced by history, from what came before for better or worse. We are told that if we don't learn from it, we'll repeat it. Our aspirations, goals, even our fears for the future color our futures. We think of time as crawling, racing or breathing down our necks. We take time, waste time, give our time. People say "act your age," speak of that which is timeless or slipping away. Time is the matrix through which we move: that for everything there is a season, and the times, they are a-changing.

Curated by Nina Corwin and documented by audio recordist Kurt Heintz, featured readers include JoAnn Balingit, Ariane Nadia Nash, Erika Mikkalo, Lynn Pattison, Keli Stewart, and Angela Torres.

Please join us for this free event on Sunday, September 9, 2012, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Woman Made Gallery.
