WIBA Monthly Luncheon - March 10, 2015
Go beyond the radar as distinguished scientist Mike Smith takes you on a journey that intrigues, inspires, educates and entertains. A leader and innovator in the science of meteorology, Mike has combined leading-edge science and a knowledge of business with stories about people and events that are shaping the very way we live. One of the creators of the modern storm warning system and author of two books,"Warnings: The True Story of How Science Tamed the Weather" and "When the Sirens Were Silent,"
Mike is a superb speaker and writer with a rare gift for making the scientific and technical understandable and interesting. From the heartwarming to the heart-wrenching and everything in between, Mike, above all, captivates.
Mike holds the highest awards in the science of meteorology, 19 patents, board certification and other honors too numerous to mention. Mike is the expert on extreme weather and its effects on people and businesses.
John Knox, University of Georgia, says Mike Smith "puts out the best real-time severe weather info of just about anyone" . . .Mike took the first-ever photo of a microburst, so this isn't just some guy who posts stuff on the Internet. He's a Fellow of the American Meteorological Society." He is out in the field making new discoveries and finding new ways to apply science to better humanity. His work is not confined to weather. Mike is making contributions in public health, search and rescue and emergency management.
The luncheon will be held at the Wichita Boathouse, home of the Kansas Sports Hall of Fame, 515 S. Wichita St., from 11:45 a.m. - 1 p.m. The cost is $20 for members and $35 for non-members. Chairman's Column - March 2015
This is a busy time for WIBA, and we love it. The Kansas Legislature is in session. Based on the survey to which many of you responded in the fall we take positions on legislation and impending regulations. We worked with a coalition of other business groups to produce legislation to reduce the impact of unemployment insurance costs as the State pays back the federal government funds loaned to keep the fund afloat during the recession. Changes made several years ago would rebuild the fund, but the costs would be high and the rates varying greatly from year to year. Despite no claims in decades, WIBA would see its UI payment go up by eleven times for 2015. Bad policy. With our business association allies we have crafted a new system that rebuilds the fund, reduces rate oscillation, and treats businesses more fairly based on their actual experience. We have also weighed in on workers compensation, the development of a state system to administer OSHA rather than the federal government, and other issues that affect your business. Locally, we have interviewed some candidates for the City Council and will complete those interviews after the March primary. If WIBA weighs in to recommend candidates to you it will be after the WIBA Board reviews the recommendations from the Government Affairs Committee and KIBPAC. The latter may not make contributions in a nonpartisan election. Regardless, get out and vote. WIBA can represent you but we cannot replace your voice at the polls. Our membership contest is off to a roaring start with 11 new members in January. If you love this organization as I do, bring a prospective member to one of our March events: March 3 - the Women's Leadership Alliance Luncheon March 6 - A new member reception to which existing members and prospects are welcome. March 10 - The membership luncheon with Mike Smith as the speaker March 19 - A fabulous Business Your Way breakfast mixer at Metro Appliance and More. We have a seminar presented by Tabor College on March 25. Mark down April 9 for WIBA's Annual Meeting with our speaker, legendary sportscaster Gary Bender at the Doubletree. Contact Judy Whiley to attend, sponsor or contribute items to the silent auction. And we are working to insure that economic development in Wichita includes a strong effort to meet local companies, identify their needs, barriers faced, and opportunities and to bring resources to them. We want to do our job the way the Shockers play basketball - with maximum energy and smarts. I urge you to get involved and the feeling that comes from working with other constructive people to make our businesses and community better.
Joe Johnson
WIBA Chairman of the Board

Thank You!...
Before Pictures - I thought there was no hope!
Nathan Regan co-owner of Burnell's Fine Jewelry and new WIBA member, told several members gathered at a recent event a story of a customer that had driven over a ring with their car. Nathan was able to repair it. That made me think of a ring that I had purchased in New York, that had sentimental value. I had completely smashed it in a door
several years ago. I took it to Nathan with little hope but he just nodded and smiled and said no problem.
I was amazed when he brought it back to me. It looks brand new!
Thanks Nathan!

Research on Overcoming Hidden Hesitation in Business Prospecting
March 25, 2015
The research shows that many very good business and professional people gradually accumulate some powerful but hidden hesitations that inhibit the amount and quality of their new business prospecting efforts and results.
In a rapid-fire way, Jim Fly will report on the research and will outline practical "cures" suggested in the research.
When Jim served as the Sales and Marketing Director for an established multistate critical care equipment firm, he and his consulting team used the research to minimize their own hidden reluctance to do enough good quality prospecting.
After learning the practical "cures" suggested in the research, within a week the prospecting efforts became much easier, the rate of prospecting rose sharply, and prospecting stress among team members subsided. Within the following 12 months, many new customers were added and sales receipts grew by about 35%, all despite a down market.
Jim now leads the marketing efforts for the Wichita campus of Tabor College, and teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in management, professional sales, and sales management.

The seminar will be held at the WIBA offices, 200 E. 1st, Ste. 101, from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.
Lunch will be provided. Reservations are REQUIRED by the Monday prior to the seminar (March 23). The cost is $25 for WIBA members and $35 for non-members.
WIBA members can make their reservations on line. Non-members need to email or call the WIBA office at 316-201-3264, email to membership@wiba.org.
