Recently, one of our case managers shared a story with us about a happy moment she experienced with a child in our care. This child is an eight-year old, nonverbal with severe autism. She and another case manager from a different agency were challenged with communication with the child. They decided to try a very hands-on approach...dumping piles of whipped topping on tables. The child loved the feel of it on his hands. The case managers then used food coloring to make different parts of the whipped topping different colors. Using corresponding cards with the same colors, the child began to choose which card matched the color of the topping. He said a muffled "red" several times. The child picked up a juice card and pointed to a Capri Sun purposely placed on the counter. This day was a breakthrough moment for the child and for our case manager who was ecstatic that communication was happening! Further plans for hands-on activities are in the works to ensure that this child experiences continued successes!
