FROM THE DESK OF THE CHAMBER PRESIDENT
Last week was a BIG one for Charlevoix.  The Michigan Main Street representatives were on hand for three days to learn more about our community and to help us map out a plan to revitalize our downtown.

I hope you had the chance to attend one of the many sessions offered. Great ideas were shared and each committee has a great starting point to get Charlevoix moving forward together.  There is still time to get involved and to learn more about what Main Street means for our community.  Please reach out to myself or Annie Doyle, Program Manager, to learn more.

*Be looking for our 2015 Raffle Car in East Park for Memorial Weekend.  Tickets will be on sale until September 16th.

*Our 17th Annual 9 Hole Golf Outing will take place at Antrim Dells on June 12th.  Signup by June 1st for early-bird pricing.

*Lastly, save the date for our Summer Merchant Open House, Monday, June 22nd, in conjunction with the first Movie in the Park.

Looking forward to a great summer.  Have a safe and happy Memorial Day!

IS THERE REALLY POVERTY IN PARADISE?
This past winter, The Centers for MI, and Bridge Magazine conducted an in depth study of rural poverty in Charlevoix, Emmet & Cheboygan counties.  They are continuing their work by holding a number of community conversations to gain additional input into the subject.  They, and Char-Em United Way, are hoping to gain insight into the community awareness of this issue, its possible causes, and how people feel it can be effectively addressed.

The community conversations are open to the public and will really only be effective IF the public attends to voice their opinion. The facilitator will pose a series of questions and the audience will use "clicker" technology in conjunction with a Power-Point presentation to generate real time, anonymous responses from the audience.

Please share this information with family and friends.  The more people attending the conversations, the better the information we will have to use in our work.  BE PART OF THE CHANGE - PLAN TO ATTEND.

Meeting 1:  Thursday, May 21, 2015, 6:30 - 8:30pm, Emmet County Building, 1129 Charlevoix Ave (US31), Petoskey (by the fairgrounds)

Meeting 2:  Tuesday, May 26, 2015, 6:30 - 8:30pm, East Jordan Civic Center, 101 Civic Center Lane, East Jordan.

Please RSVP to info@thecenterformichigan.net.

DNR SEEKS PUBLIC INPUT ON FISHERMAN'S ISLAND STATE PARK GENERAL MANAGEMENT PLAN
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources recently announced that it is seeking public input on a new General Management Plan to guide the future of Fisherman's Island State Park, located in Charlevoix County.  People are invited to share their opinions and ideas through an online survey, available through June 24th at www.surveymonkey.com/fishermansisland

The 2,678-acre park includes more than six miles of scenic Lake Michigan shoreline with 80 rustic campsites, a picnic area, foot trails and undeveloped land for hunting and wildlife observation.

The General Management Plan for Fisherman's Island State Park defines a long-range (10-20 years) planning and management strategy that will assist the DNR Parks and Recreations Division in meeting its responsibilities to 1) protect and preserve the site's natural and cultural resources, and 2) provide access to land-and water-based public recreation and educational opportunities.

This survey is one of several opportunities for the public and stakeholders to be involved in the planning process.  An informational meeting was held Nov 3, 2014, introducing interested citizens to the planning process.  The DNR also will host a public open house later this year, providing an opportunity for review and comment on the draft plan.

Additional information on the DNR's General Management Plan process is available at

NURSING SCHOLARSHIPS FROM CHARLEVOIX AREA HOSPITAL FOUNDATION
Nurses are an integral part of the healthcare workforce and are often the front line staff for your medical needs.  Their work is an important contribution in building the foundation for quality, patient-centered, compassionate care, part of the long-standing mission of Charlevoix Area Hospital.

This means recruiting smart and caring individuals and supporting those looking to go into the field.  The hospital provides an in-house scholarship for staff looking to continue their education.  Additionally, the Peggy Carey Northway Nursing Scholarship is available to any student living in the Charlevoix Area Hospital service area that has been accepted into an accredited school of nursing.

Peggy Carey Northway was a 1974 Charlevoix High School graduate who had completed two years of nursing school at the University of Michigan when she was diagnosed with leukemia.  A fund was established by family and friends in her memory and provides an annual $1000 scholarship, which may be renewable for a second year.

Scholarship details, eligibility criteria and applications can be found at www.cah.org/foundation and should be submitted to the Charlevoix Area Hospital Foundation at 14700 Lake Shore Drive.  The deadline for applications is June 15, 2015.

CRE8TIVE CUPCAKE FOUNDER ALFRED SORIANO-MICHEAU CELEBRATES
CHAR-EM UNITED WAY'S STUFF THE BUS RECIPIENT OF THE GIFTS
Twenty five marks a very special birthday for anyone; the creator of Cre8tive Cupcake in Charlevoix has a very special way of celebrating life events!  Rather than accept personal gifts, Alfred Soriano-Micheau, owner and culinary artist of Cre8tive Cupcake invited guests to contribute to a cause near to his heart.  For his 25th birthday celebration, held on Friday, May 15th, he asked guests to bring school supplies in lieu of a personal gift.  These gifts will be distributed to area schools as part of Char-Em United Way's "Stuff the Bus" school supply drive.  A "bus" was on hand and attendees at the party, a royal ball held at Castle Farms, filled it to overflowing with school supplies.

Each fall Char-Em United Way asks the community to come together and help them "Stuff the Bus" with supplies which are then delivered to each of the districts in the two county area.  Anyone wishing to contribute to this school supply drive is welcome to contact Char-Em United Way.  Our efforts will be in full force this August, from the 1st through the 15th.  Look for boxes at local retailers or drop off supplies at the United Way office in the lower level of the Red Cross Building in Petoskey.

For more information on Stuff the Bus, Click Here.

LIBRARY ACCEPTING DONATIONS FOR SUMMER BOOK SALE
The friends of the Charlevoix Public Library are now accepting donations of gently used adult and children's books, CD's and DVD's for the annual Summer Book Sale to be held on June 27th & 28th at the Library.  Organizers ask donors not to leave textbooks, Readers Digest Condensed books, encyclopedias, VHS tapes, or any material stored in damp places as mold raises health concerns.  Donations may be left in the cart at the Mason Street entrance foyer.  Proceeds from the annual book sale are used to fund new books, materials and programs for the library's children's department.

CHAR-EM UNITED WAY EXTENDS THANKS TO FIFTH THIRD BANK
Fifth Third Bank marked "Fifth Third Day - May 3rd" by awarding a $1000 donation to Char-Em United Way.

"United Way meets a tremendous need in our community - especially in these difficult economic times.  Contributing to United Way is a way to support a wide range of health and human service programs," says Phil Millard, Community President.  "Fifth Third is pleased to host a workplace campaign annually and to provide corporate support as well."

In addition to sponsoring the Instant  Wine Cellar event, and the upcoming Leadership Circle receptions, employees of the local Fifth Third branches in Petoskey and Boyne City held their work site campaign in the fall and donated $7,310, with a corporate contribution of $3000.

"We are very grateful for the support of Fifth Third Bank and its employees for our campaign," says Lorraine Manary, Executive Director of Char-Em United Way.  "These generous contributions will help us address the need for health and human services in our community. In these tough times the need has risen, with just under $300,000 requested from Char-Em United Way in support of vital programs.  Fifth Third's support has been critical to our ability to make an impact on community needs."

For more information or to make a donation to United Way, call 231.487.1006, or email info@charemunitedway.org.  Visit our website at

FURNITURE & EQUIPMENT EXCHANGE - ON CHAR-EM UNITED WAY'S VOLUNTEER CONNECTIONS WEBSITE.
Created to help satisfy business & non-profit "need" as relates to the donation of used furniture and office equipment.  Sometimes businesses need to give away items due to remodeling etc., and would like to donate them.  Non-profits often need to receive these items rather than spend precious resources which could be used in programming.

Any offer of service or a donation will be shared with those registered.  If you'd like to receive an automatic email each time something is offered, become a FAN.

Go to www.charemunitedway.org/volunteer for more information or call 231.487.1006 or email info@charemunitedway.org.

DOMAINE CABIRAU COTES du ROUSSILLON 2012
This bargain of a wine would be a deal at twice the price!  Dan Kravitz who brings us this wine is living the dream.  After nearly three decades of working hard to bring great wines to the US market, he has pulled the trigger and acquired vines in Maury, Southwest France.  The parcels of vines age between 25-60 years old and are planted to Grenache, Syrah and Carignan.  This 2012 has power, deep red almost black color extracted from the grape skins and aromas of a spice jar and dark red forest fruit.  On the palate the wine has all the power from the color and aroma transmitting but with an elegance and refinement that reminds me of its origin - the Mediterranean coast.  Thus the finished wine is suitable for service with grilled lamb or your favorite piece of fish.  We suggest a whole Salmon stuffed with lemon wheels, thyme, garlic and some salt on your grill.  If you still haven't realized what we offer is always solid because we taste and evaluate everything,  look to the 92 point score from the Wine Advocate for reassurance,

Regular price $19/bottle.  Just in time for your Memorial Day holiday grilling, we offer this wine at a substantial discount of only $16/bottle with a 5 bottle minimum purchase.  The wine arrives Wednesday, May 20.  Please call 231.237.9300 to order.

Our Market is open Tuesday thru Saturday, 10am - 6pm.  We are stocking up.  Currently we have fresh steaks, lamb, eggs, and much more.

May dinner service is Friday thru Sunday from 6pm
