ISLAND AIRWAYS ANNOUNCES 70TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION
January 1, 2015 marks the beginning of a year-long celebration of the 70th anniversary of the start of McPhillips Flying Service, Inc.

McPhillips Flying Service, Inc. has been serving the aviation needs of residents and visitors to Beaver Island since 1945.  The company was started by Joe and Ane' McPhillips to provide mail and passenger service to the island when the ferry was unable to run.  The first aircraft was a WWII surplus Sikorsky Flying Boat.  The company expanded over the course of 70 years to include a fleet of four Britten Norman Islanders, a Piper Aztec, and a Piper Apache.  In recent years the company has flown over 30,000 passengers per year as well as nearly 1.5 million pounds of freight.  The services provided have also increased to include year-round Federal Express, UPS, prescriptions, hazardous materials, and air ambulance service.  McPhillips Flying Service, Inc. still holds the United States Postal Service Contract...one of the longest running air mail contracts in the Continental United States.

Starting in January, each person who flies with Island Airways will be entered in a monthly drawing for a free round trip ticket.  Additionally, monthly prize drawings will be held and will include Island Airways merchandise, discount coupons for travel etc.

Later in 2015, a "Customer Appreciation Hangar Party" will be held.  More details will be announced in the coming months.

In December 2015, a drawing will be held for a booklet of 10 one way tickets.  All passengers who travel with Island Airways in 2015 will be entered in the drawing.

For more information go to www.islandairways.com and www.facebook.com/Island-Airways.

GREAT LAKES ENERGY TO THE RESCUE
Raven Hill Discovery Center's Ham Radio Station is up and running.  With help from members of the Top of Michigan Amateur Radio Club (TOMARC) in Gaylord, the station is operational and the first class of technicians has received their ham radio licenses.  Recently, local electric company, Great Lakes Energy, came to the station's rescue, when sliding snow ripped the new ham radio antenna off the Center's roof.  A Great Lakes crew came out and set a utility pole for Raven Hill to use as a freestanding antenna.

Anyone interested in joining the Raven Hill Discovery Center Amateur Radio Club or attending a technician class, should contact Cheri at 231.536.3369 or email her at info@ravenhilldiscoverycenter.org.

AMERICAN RED CROSS BLOOD DRIVE

Date:  Thursday, January 22, 2015

Time:  9:30am - 3:15pm

Place:  Harbor Industries, 100 Harbor Drive

The American Red Cross encourages eligible blood donors to start a lifesaving habit by becoming a regular blood donor this year, starting with national Blood Donor Month in January.

January is a challenging time for blood donations.  Inclement weather can result in blood drive cancellations, and cold and flu season may cause some donors to be unable to make or keep blood donation appointments.  National Blood Donor Month, celebrated in January since 1970, raises awareness of the need for blood during the winter and throughout the year, while honoring those who roll up a sleeve to help patients in need.

Donors of all blood types are needed, especially those with O negative, A negative and B negative.  Type O negative is the universal blood type and can be transfused to patients with any blood type.  Types A and B negative can be transfused to Rh positive or negative patients.

To learn more about donating blood and to schedule an appointment, download the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visits www.redcrossblood.org or call 800- RED CROSS (800-733-2767)
