FLSA Stifles Work Flexibiliy, HR Director Testifies

 

An imminent Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) proposed rule is likely to make the law's impediments to a flexible workplace only worse, said Nicole Berberich, SHRM-CP, human resources director of the Cincinnati Animal Referral and Emergency Center, in June 10, 2015, congressional testimony.

 

Speaking on behalf of the Society for Human Resource Management before the U.S. House Subcommittee on Workforce Protections, Berberich said, "SHRM remains concerned about the challenges presented by the FLSA." One of the main concerns is its impact on workplace flexibility, including comp time, the biweekly workweek and working remotely, she noted.  Read More

Employers' Health Costs Projected to Rise 6.5% for 2016  
  
Medical costs for employers in the U.S. will increase 6.5 percent for 2016, slightly lower than the 6.8 percent projected for 2015, predicts Pricewaterhouse Coopers' Health Research Institute (HRI).

Oregon Ban the Box, Strengthens Noncompete and Social Media Protections

The ban-the-box movement continues to spread, this time into the Pacific Northwest. House Bill (H.B.) 3025, passed by the Oregon legislature, would regulate when Oregon employers can ask applicants to disclose criminal convictions. If the bill is signed by Gov. Kate Brown, as expected, it would go into effect on Jan. 1, 2016.
