Presidents letter
I want to thank everyone that attended our May Chapter Member Appreciation event at Branches in Federal Way. It was great getting to talk to and get to know each person that was there more on a personal level. We had job seekers in attendance that were very grateful to our members for offering assistance in their job searches. I really love it when we reach out to help others that need our assistance. Our Chapter tries to rally around those in need and to show support.

These efforts allow each affiliated chapter to increase its viability and effectiveness, as well as promote the HR profession at the local level. Additionally, this program was designed to enhance the business acumen of local volunteer leaders! This program raises the bar of excellence for affiliates and introduces the EXCEL Awards - a tiered recognition and awards system.

Series: What Employers Can Learn From the Hertz Controversy Over Prayer at Work; Part I
By Richard D. Alaniz
Religion in the workplace can present a difficult balancing act for employers. Failing to strike the right balance can lead to clashes with workers and unions, potential lawsuits, trouble with federal regulators, and a negative public image.
Consider Hertz's situation. According to news reports, in October the car-rental company fired 26 Muslim employees who refused to clock out for their paid prayer breaks. In response to the firings, the drivers' union launched a public relations campaign alleging religious discrimination and has filed complaints with federal regulators.

D.C. Circuit Overturns NLRB Poster Requirement
By Allen Smith
The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) violated the National Labor Relations Act (NLRA) when it made an employer's failure to display a poster about employees' right to join unions an unfair labor practice, the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit held May 7, 2013.
In 2011 the board issued a rule that the 6 million employers subject to its jurisdiction would be guilty of an unfair labor practice if they did not post, on their properties and websites, an NLRB poster notifying workers of their rights under the NLRA.
Organizations representing employers, including the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), objected to the rule, saying it violated the NLRA and the First Amendment to the Constitution. More than 7,000 comments were filed about the proposed poster.
"The proposed notice is silent regarding federal labor law rights to decertify or withdraw from third-party union representation, to seek relief for a union's failure to represent employees fairly and/or to object to paying the portion of union dues or fees used to support activities unrelated to collective bargaining, contract administration or grievance adjustment," Michael Aitken, SHRM vice president of government affairs wrote in Feb. 22, 2011, comments on the proposal.
