Diversity Corner

Diversity Benefits Require Preparation

All job applicants at our organization are required to write a brief essay explaining how they will promote diversity in the workplace. All but a very small minority will expound on their tolerance of people of different races and ethnicities while a very small number will actually explain how they would personally contribute to an open and welcoming environment for people of color. It is very rare to find an applicant who acknowledges that a diverse workforce is one that goes beyond racial integration and multiculturalism or, that work teams comprised of people from diverse backgrounds, occupations and skills can be more productive.

If behavior-based interviewing is such an effective method of identifying qualified candidates for a job, why does so much research show that employers are regularly dissatisfied with their new hires? asked Carol Quinn, CEO of the Delray Beach, FL., hiring consultancy, Hire Authority Inc.

"Traditional behavior-based interviewing does a reasonable job of assessing the candidate's skills, but it is not effective as a predictor of future performance because it fails to take motivation into account," she said, during her session at the Society for Human Resource Management's 2013 Talent Management Conference & Exposition held April 15-17. "Just because people are good at doing something doesn't mean they love to do it. If hiring for skills and competency alone were enough, all organizations would have only high-potential employees their workforce."

SKCHRA Achieves Membership Star Status!

 SHRM Membership Star

The SKCHRA has earned the 2012 Membership Star Award. This award recognizes achievement in SHRM membership growth during the 2012 calendar year. But that's not all! In February of 2013, the SKCHRA achieved Super Star status. In other words, we are well on our way to earning the Membership SUPER Star Award for 2013.

Thank you to all of our new and longstanding SKCHRA members who helped make this happen.

You are the stars that make our chapter shine!

You can help us maintain our star status (and achieve super star status) by keeping your SKCHRA chapter designation up to date and encouraging your friends and colleagues to designate too; doing so is free. SKCHRA meetings and events are much more meaningful as a chapter member. Chapter membership is free and chapter members get countless perks, including: Access to our popular Meal Deal Card program, reduced registration for chapter meetings, free or reduced pricing for events and seminars, access to the Member Resource Center and much more! Designation forms are available at our chapter meetings or you can join online by clicking here.

First, Break All the Rules :

What the Worlds Greatest Managers Do Differently - 99 edition

May Book Review 2013 The greatest managers in the world seem to have little in common. They differ in sex, age, and race. They employ vastly different styles and focus on different goals. Yet despite their differences, great managers share one common trait: They do not hesitate to break virtually every rule held sacred by conventional wisdom. They do not believe that, with enough training, a person can achieve anything he sets his mind to. They do not try to help people overcome their weaknesses. They consistently disregard the golden rule. And, yes, they even play favorites.
