Presidents letter
Spring?
When we think about the coming of spring, it evokes thoughts of sunshine, new plant growth and bursts of energy as we leave the gray Washington skies behind. It can also evoke absenteeism within our employee ranks due to the classic 'spring fever'.
Or, you have the continuous wave of employees that have stockpiled vacation days for use in better weather. How do you staff your organization when you have planned or unplanned time off? How many employees have asked for a flexible work schedule for personal reasons with the answer always being, "no, our company does not have any flexibility, your work week is 5 days a week." Have you ever thought that there is a different or acceptable alternative to the never-ending "no" and the continuous turnover that may be caused by inflexibility?

High Court Will Review FLSA "Clothes-Changing" Case
The U.S. Supreme Court, on Feb. 19, 2013, agreed to review whether employees' time spent putting on and taking off safety equipment is time spent "changing clothes" within the meaning of a Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) provision. Section 203(o) of the act provides that an employee's FLSA-compensable working hours exclude "any time spent in changing clothes" at the beginning or end of the workday that is excluded from "measured working time" under a collective bargaining agreement (CBA) (Sandifer v. U.S. Steel Corp., No. 12-417).
