Celebrating Lent!

On March 5, we begin the holy season of Lent, which will lead up to the climax of our liturgical year with the Triduum. This year, let us not only give up something for Lent but try to do something extra each day to share the glory of God on earth.

*Remember to abstain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday and the Fridays during Lent and also to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.

For more Lenten resources, please visit http://www.usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/liturgical-resources/lent/resources-for-lent-and-easter.cfm

Prayer for Lent

God, heavenly Father,
look upon me and hear my prayer
during this holy Season of Lent.
By the good works You inspire,
help me to discipline my body
and to be renewed in spirit.

Father, our source of life,
I reach out with joy to grasp Your hand;
let me walk more readily in Your ways.
Guide me in Your gentle mercy,
for left to myself I cannot do Your Will.

Amen.

Upcoming Retreat!

"Do not let anyone look down on you because you are young, but be an example for the believers in your speech, your conduct, your love of faith and purity." -1 Timothy 4:12

Search (a retreat for high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors) is going to be offered by the Diocese of Charleston the weekend of April 11-13, 2014, at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church in Chapin, SC. This is a great opportunity for the students to explore in a deeper way their own faith and will be led by high school students from around the state. Search is perfect for those who have a strong faith and for those who might be questioning God's existence. For more information, please contact Michelle McGinley at mmcginley@behs.com.

BE's International Program!
A Connection That Lasts a Lifetime...

Bishop England High School is looking for families to host exchange students for the 2014/2015 school year. The Diocese of Charleston has contracted with Three W International Program to bring students to our Catholic schools across the state. Bishop England will welcome Chinese students to join our educational community as they share their culture with us, learn about the American culture, and work towards their high school diploma.

We are looking for Host Families willing to open their hearts, minds, and homes to the students who will be attending our school. The role of a host family is to provide room & board and a nurturing home environment. A monthly stipend of $800 is available to host families to offset the costs related to hosting an international student. The rewards of hosting are many. Your family will learn and grow with the experience as you build life-long friendships and give one another the experience of a lifetime.

For more information about this opportunity, including stipend details, please contact Lisa Doyle, Host Family Coordinator with Bishop England High School, at ldoyle@behs.com or call 843-849-9599, ext.139.

Guidance Department Student of the Month!
Congratulations on a job well done!

                           Kathleen Hart

Congratulations to Kathleen Hart, a current senior, who scored a perfect score on the SAT Test!  According to the College Board, SAT scores are reported on a scale from 200-800, with additional sub scores reported for the essay (ranging from 2-12) and for multiple-choice writing questions (on a 20-80 scale). Your scores tell college admissions staff how students did compared with other students who took the test.  Kathleen is still waiting to hear from some of her college applications, so she is unsure about which college she will attend! Whatever school Kathleen attends is very lucky to have her! Congratulation, Kathleen!

RAK Club

New Group Forms at Bishop England!

It could be free baked goods for all or a free Chic-Fil-A breakfast for an entire homeroom.  The Random Acts of Kindness Club is alive and well at BE.  "We simply want to lift spirits, create smiles and satisfy our inner desires to do for others," says club moderator Coach Jimmy Garrett.  Two juniors Madison Gambrill and Victoria Savage were very instrumental in the forming of this group.  "I taught both of these wonderful girls last year, and I believe as a class project during their sophomore year, I may have wet their appetite to do for others.  They approached me before Christmas with a desire to form a club, and I could not turn them away."  The initial response has been tremendous with more than 40 students responding to the call of kind acts.  They also have paid a five dollar membership fee, which serves as the club's budget.  In the future, there is no telling what this club may do for you.  As the club moderator likes to say,  "Don't pay it back; pay it forward!"

The Library Book Club!

Collected 100 Books for area schools

Book Club Book Drive Nets Hundreds of Books

The Library Book Club collected and donated four large boxes of books to Book Angels, a local not-for-profit organization that promotes reading. Book Angels donates the books to area elementary and middle schools to help establish classroom lending libraries. The idea is to give children access to books they can read in the classroom or bring home to read for fun.

Thanks so much to all the generous donors who contributed books during the Book Club Book Drive!

Cleats For A Cause

Thank you for supporting Cleats for a Cause!

Jenny Johanning, community activist from Nosara, Costa Rica, receiving the cleats from Dominick and Isabella Schettini to distribute to the soccer players in La Esperaza, Playa Guiones, Costa Rica.

During the recent cleat drive at Bishop England High School, Dominick Schettini, founder of "Cleats for a Cause," and Freddy Brown collected 15 pairs of cleats. The "Cleats for a Cause" mission is to share blessings around the world through soccer. Dominick started this project 3 years ago before going to visit his family in Colombia, South America.  When he saw the excitement of the soccer players as they received their first soccer cleats, he realized it was just the beginning. Today "Cleats for a Cause" has 6 leaders in three different states.  Their efforts have made a dream come true to 500+ kids around the world in countries like Honduras, Colombia, Uruguay, Uganda, and Ghana. The cleats collected at Bishop England are going to benefit kids in Nosara, Costa Rica.
