Holy Family

The month of February is dedicated to the Holy Family. Let us pray that we may follow their example to make our own families more holy each day.

O God, Heavenly Father, it was part of Thine eternal decree that Thine only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ, the Savior of the human race, should form a holy family with Mary, His blessed mother, and his foster father, Saint Joseph. In Nazareth, home life was sanctified, and a perfect example was given to every Christian family. Grant, we beseech Thee, that we may fully comprehend and faithfully imitate the virtues of the Holy Family so the we may be united with them one day in their heavenly glory.

Through the same Christ our Lord.

Amen

Why Support the Gala?

Bishop England High School has been providing an outstanding Catholic college preparatory education to thousands of students since it was founded almost 100 years ago.  Students graduating from BEHS excel in life through leadership, achievement, and service - skills learned as part of the Bishop England experience.  BE students are critical thinkers who understand the importance of human dignity and empathy, who respect themselves and others, and who live their faith through action.  BEHS depends on the support of many - faculty, staff, alumni, friends and family -- giving their time, talents, and resources.

Funds raised at the 2014 Emerald Ball will go towards tuition assistance and building needs.  Attending the 2014 Emerald Ball will help ensure that the tradition of a BEHS education can remain strong and that deserving students are able to pursue a Bishop England education.

Host a student! Change a Life!
Become a host family for an international student....
Spanning The Globe...

Bishop England High School is looking for families to host exchange students for the 2014/2015 school year. The Diocese of Charleston has contracted with Three W International Program to bring students to our Catholic schools across the state. Bishop England will welcome Chinese students to join our educational community as they share their culture with us, learn about the American culture, and work towards their high school diploma. We are looking for Host Families willing to open their hearts, minds, and homes for the students who will be attending our school.

For more information about this opportunity, including stipend details, please contact Lisa Doyle, Host Family Coordinator with Bishop England High School, at ldoyle@behs.com or call 843-849-9599, ext.139.

Guidance Department's Student of the Month

                         Leah Mumme-McConnell

                                     January 2014

Leah Mumme-McConnell was chosen as Guidance Student of the Month for January 2014. Mrs. Brown, Mr. Garrett, and Mr. Colizzi nominated Leah for her tremendous giving heart, community involvement, and compassion for ALL! Mrs. Brown said "She has been in my homeroom for three years and I have taught her. She is an absolutely delightful young woman...poised, friendly, positive, conscientious...just lovely."

Leah is very active on Bishop England's campus. She is a member of the cross country, track, and softball teams. She has been an Options Scholar, and is currently a member of the Bellas and the new Random Acts of Kindness Club. Off campus Leah is busy dancing for Susan Causey, teaching Sunday school, and a reader and altar server. Leah's passion for helping others is so strong that in November, she took it upon herself to create a running shoe drive with Mr. Finneran's support!

Mrs. Brown also stated "To know her is to respect, enjoy, and love her." Guidance would like to recognize Leah and commend her for her love for humanity and all that she has accomplished at BE! This summer, Leah is planning to go overseas to do mission work in Peru. We ask our BE family to extend prayers for her and the mission team as they travel and continue to serve God.

Book Angel Book Drive.....

Book Angel Book Drive Feb. 10-15

The Library Book Club is holding a book drive for Book Angels to collect new and slightly used recreational reading books for PreK through 8th grade students. The books will be distributed to low-income public schools, giving the students the chance to read fun books at home and in the classroom.

Please drop off books in the box in the BEHS Lobby during the week of Feb. 10-15. What a great way to celebrate Valentine's Day by spreading a love of reading!

Please contact BEHS Librarian Ms.Bing at mbing@behs.com with any questions.

Key Club

Updates and Accomplishments!

Bishop England Key Club

With a record 207 members, the Key Club is proud of its accomplishments in 2013 and excited for its events this coming spring semester!

On October 24th, the Key Club held its first blood drive of the school year and had to turn away 5 willing donors; the Red Cross just ran out of time and could not accommodate everyone who signed up to donate.

In order not to turn away anyone on the January 16th blood drive, the Red Cross provided BE two extra technicians.   BE did not let the Red Cross regret its decision; we expanded to 48 potential donors and went 3 units above goal - even during Flu Season!  Way to go Bishops

!

December also proved to be an accomplishing month for Key Club members!  At least a half-dozen Key Club members volunteered at the Christ Our King Christmas Tree Sale and helped the school sell out of trees by the afternoon of December 8th, a record sale time! In addition, in less than a week, 42 Key Club members donated books, toys, and gift cards that were delivered to Northwoods Middle School students in North Charleston in mid-December. Many children's holidays were brightened by the Christmas gifts they received from our members. Well done again, Key Club members!

So what's next on the Key Club agenda?  Along with many upcoming service opportunities, there are two big events to keep in mind! The final blood drive of the school year will be held on Thursday, April 3rd, and the Key Club is once again expecting a completely filled day of BE donors. Finally, everyone's favorite event of the year will be here before we know it! The Key Club vs. Faculty and Staff basketball game is scheduled for Monday, May 19.  Who will be this year's champions...?

Make sure to stay posted to future Key Club events this spring, and continue your participation and support in the Club!  On behalf of the Key Club members, a Happy New Year to all!

Cleats For A Cause

Mission Statement.. "Our mission is to make sure that soccer lovers all over the world own a pair of cleats."

BE Sophomores Dominick Schettini and Freddy Browm are involved with a local organization called "Cleats For A Cause."  This organization has distributed several hundred pairs of cleats to

underprivileged children who love the game of soccer in Uruguay, Columbia, Honduras, Jamaica, and Uganda.

Bishop England needs your help to support this wonderful cause. Please consider donating your gently used soccer cleats to a less fortunate soccer lover somewhere throughout the world. A bin is located in the school lobby outside the front office for your donations.

For more information about "Cleats for a Cause," please click here.
