As we begin a new year, let us make a firm resolution to grow even more in holiness......

God, Thank you for a new year. May everyone in our family be willing to begin anew with a clean slate. We know that you are always ready to forgive us. Help us to be willing to forgive ourselves and to forgive one another. As we begin a new year, remind us of our truest values and our deepest desires. Help us to live in the goodness that comes from doing what you want us to do. Help us to put aside anxiety about the future and the past so that we might live in peace with you now, one day at a time.

Through Christ our Lord,

Amen.

Emerald Ball Gala 2014

Dear Parents and Friends of Bishop England High School,

Start your new year out by supporting the Bishop England Emerald Ball. Money raised at the gala (which will be held on February 7, 2014) will be used for tuition assistance and important building needs.

What can YOU do? We're so glad you asked...

  • Donate an item for the silent or live auction. No item is too small because we can package some things together. Some of the things collected so far include certificates for haircuts, restaurant gift cards, a trip to NYC, beach houses, and jewelry. When you are out shopping, please consider soliciting an item for BE. Have you received a gift card you won't use? We would love to have it.
  • Be a sponsor for the event. The more expenses that are underwritten by sponsorships, the more funds can be added to the bottom line. Sponsorship opportunities start at $250, which includes 2 gala tickets and advertising. For more information, click here...
  • Get together with some friends, and host an event for an exciting addition to this year's gala: Party with a Purpose. You would determine the theme and date of the party and how many people could attend. You would also set the price per attendee. On the night of the gala, there will be sign-up sheets with the details for each party offered. We hope to be able to offer 10 different parties. So far, we have an oyster roast for 50, a sunset cruise for 50, and a Girls' Night out. Some popular party offerings we have seen are a tennis gathering with a lesson thrown in, a Kentucky Derby party complete with prizes for best hat, a flower arranging class, and a wine tasting. Just use your imagination! Not only do all proceeds go to the gala receipts, but also it is a great chance to meet some new people.
  • Purchase a wine cork for $20 to participate in a wine pull. The cork will have a number on it, which corresponds to a bottle of wine. You are guaranteed to "pull" a bottle worth at least $20, but we already have bottles worth much more. If you have a nice bottle of wine left over from your celebrations, we will take it off your hands. We do ask that the bottle have a value of at least $20.
Thanks so much for your consideration of the above possibilities to contribute to Bishop England's premier fundraiser-The Emerald Ball. If you have any questions, please feel free to email Mary Nemeth at mnemeth@behs.com.

Host a student! Change a Life!
Become a host family for an international student....
Spanning The Globe...

Bishop England High School is looking for families to host exchange students for the 2014/2015 school year. The Diocese of Charleston has contracted with Three W International Program to bring students to our Catholic schools across the state. Bishop England will welcome Chinese students to join our educational community as they share their culture with us, learn about the American culture, and work towards their high school diploma. We are looking for Host Families willing to open their hearts, minds, and homes for the students who will be attending our school.

For more information about this opportunity, including stipend details, please contact Lisa Doyle, Host Family Coordinator with Bishop England High School, at ldoyle@behs.com or call 843-849-9599, ext.139.

CSMC Money Drive.....

The CSMC Money Drive during the month of November is a BE tradition close to 50 years old. This year the generosity of the students has beaten last year's record-breaking contributions of $5000 by $500. Leading all homerooms by several hundred dollars were the sophomore homerooms of Coach Garrett and Mrs. Durst.

The closing of Piggly Wiggly ended a very long partnership in our Food Drive endeavor. However, Mr. Pete Schwartz and his staff at the Daniel Island Publix stepped up and gave us all of the assistance we needed from supplying grocery bags to ordering and delivering the food to us. The money raised was used to purchase 30 cases each of rice, instant mashed potatoes, and pancake batter mix; 25 cases each of pancake syrup and grits; as well as 50 cases of beef stew. The grocery purchases were supplemented with canned goods that were the price of a tag day for the students. Twelve parishes and organizations such as The Neighborhood House on America Street and the OLM Outreach on Johns Island benefitted from the students' generosity. Additionally, a check for $500 was sent to the Bishop's Assistance Fund of Bishop Robert Guglielmone.

This project is a big undertaking and would never be as successful as it is without the help of all of the CSMC members, students, faculty, and staff who participated and encouraged the giving. Also, a special thanks goes out to our maintenance staff as well as the football players and PE students who helped unload the truck, laid the food out in the gym, and assisted the recipients with loading their cars. Such a huge joint effort is what the BE spirit is all about!

Youth in Government Conference
Congratulations on a job well done!

Thirty freshmen, sophomores, juniors, and seniors took part in the annual Youth in Government Conference on November 20-23 in Columbia. Six of these students formed an attorney team which participated in a mock trial and an appeals court case. Our attorney team members were Jessie Crosby, Caitlin Greenho, Maddie Conway, Sydney Copleston, Megan Nemeth, and Will Hanahan.

Most of the other delegates worked in pairs to propose a bill, present it in a committee, and if approved in committee present the bill in their respective legislative chamber. Several of our delegates served in leadership roles this year: Taylor Rice served as presider over one of the legislative chambers, Elliott Erickson was chair of a committee, and Carolyn Roberts and Megan Todaro served as co-chairs of committees.

Youth in Government in South Carolina has been holding conferences involving a model state government for over twenty-five years. A youth governor, lieutenant governor, Speaker of the House, Attorney General, and Secretary of State are elected by the conference delegates after candidates are selected in primaries. There are even positions for student lobbyists to urge lawmakers to support or oppose various bills.

At night when the day's business is over, students attend events such as the Governor's Banquet and the Governor's Ball.

The whole conference is an amazing experience that allows students to be leaders and to develop public speaking skills while learning first-hand about the workings of South Carolina state government. An informational meeting will be held during the spring semester for students interested in attending next year's conference.

Random Acts of Kindness at BE

RAK Club coming soon!

Random Acts of Kindness to Become RAK Club:

For over a year now, students throughout Bishop England have been conducting random acts of kindness, aka RAK's. With over one thousand committed last spring and more than 700 so far this fall, you may have been a target and didn't know it.  The next phase is to begin a more official club.  "I believe rather than continuing to encourage these in my classes, we should form a group who truly have it in their hearts to make a difference.  While our numbers may shrink as opposed to my 100 students, I believe the acts themselves may be more genuine.  I had two students of mine from last year approach me about making this an official club.  It didn't take much thought after that," says Coach Garrett.  This club will launch officially in the spring semester of 2014.  Anyone interested in participating should speak with Coach Garrett.
