Let Us Pray!

Father, you give us this day.
Help us to seek you and know you in everything praying hands
we do today, and in everyone we meet.
Pour your peace into our hearts
that we may be a source of strength and hope
to all we meet.
Father, fill our hearts with your love,
that our day may be spent in giving to all those
around us.
Lord, all that we are and all that we have is
your gift to us. With our lives and all that is in
us we praise you; make us whole in your spirit,
so that everything we do today may be prayer
to you.

Through Christ Our Lord...Amen
A Message from our new Principal!

Welcome to the 2013-2014 school year!

August brings the hopes and dreams of a new school year.  The stores are filled with "back-to-school" sales and school supplies.  There is an excitement about the possibilities.  August also brings the end of summer fun with family and friends.  A time to relax and enjoy.  Hopefully, you have created cherished memories of time together.

This year brings a new excitement for my wife, Myra, and I.  We completed the move to Charleston in June, and have enjoyed all the city has to offer this summer.  Charleston is a beautiful city, and we are excited to be a part of this community.  As I begin my journey as principal at Bishop England, Myra will begin her journey with the students at Ashley Hall.  She will be teaching Chemistry.  Education is in our blood.

Thank you for choosing Bishop England High School; a faith-filled atmosphere for students to reach their fullest potential.  I look at Catholic schools as a family.  We work with our families to enhance the values taught in the home, and encourage our students to become responsible, Christian citizens.  We are tied to a common mission of helping our students learn the skills needed to be successful in future endeavors, and to provide a faith community that allows them to develop as Christian role models.

For those who are new to Bishop England, welcome!

To those who are returning, welcome back!

Mr. Patrick Finneran

Bishop England High School Principal

Random Acts of Kindness!

In the spring of 2013 over 1000 RAK's (Random Acts of Kindness) were completed by sophomores at Bishop England as a part of Theology class with Coach Garrett. "We were just trying to make BE a better place to be"

Hopefully some of those kind acts spread into the community and made people smile. The students would place a mark on the board under their class and I would randomly ask them to explain what they did. What a variety we had. From saving lost dogs to picking up someone's tab. I think the students grew from doing things for others and I plan on continuing it with my upcoming classes this fall". Don't be surprised if someone does a kind act for you, it's just who we are.

Don't pay it back, just pass it forward!

A Summer Well Spent!

Making Beautiful Connections Exploring Africa!

Africa

In June, six students went with Ms. Tarkany and Ms. Ronco to Senegal, in West Africa. In the capital city of Dakar, they went to the beach, learned how to bargain at the markets, and had a solemn visit to the site of one of the largest slave ports in Africa. Then they spent six days in village on the coast staying with local families. There, they learned about what life is like for so many people in the world: no indoor plumbing, trash pickup, or internet access. They also worked very hard painting buildings that needed to be painted, including the ecotourism center and the mosque. They were very moved by the generosity and deep sense of happiness of everyone in the village. Even though the village did not have many of the comforts the students were used to having at home, they loved the life there and hope to return to visit their host families and new friends. After the stay in the village, they went to a resort hotel and went on a safari where they saw giraffes, rhinos, exotic birds, and zebras! It was a trip that opened everyone's minds and hearts and each participate hopes to keep their connection to Senegal.

News From Our Librarian!
Library Adds Ebooks Database

LibraryHave you heard this before? "I googled it and I couldn't find anything." That's because google, as good as it is, is not the best tool for academic research. Luckily, BE students have other excellent resources to turn to, one of which is the new ebrary ebooks database. Ebrary supplies access to about 10,000 nonfiction books on a wide variety of topics covering everything from careers to physics.

The BEHS Library already offers students access to thousands of excellent print books-both fiction and nonfiction-as well as digital resources: JSTOR for literary research, DISCUS databases from the South Carolina State Library and hand-picked links on the BEHS Library site.  And, they're amazingly easy to access. All you have to do is go to bishopenglandlibrary.com or come into the BEHS Library and ask Ms. Bing for help.  The databases do require a password for home access, which students can get in the BEHS Library.

The take-away? Next time your child tells you they googled it and couldn't find anything, ask them if they looked on the BEHS Library website. With ebrary, DISCUS, JSTOR, the BEHS Library Catalog and reviewed websites, they are sure to find what they need!

Keeping up with Technology
Technology Update!

technology
As many of you have noticed some of the changes in technology being
made around the school, the improvements have continued over the
summer. BE now has new servers in place which will help streamline
many processes for faculty and staff.  We will experience bumps
in the road, but overall the health and wellbeing of the data is
critical.  Additional security measures have been added to protect the
integrity of our data, as well as our faculty's information.  New
electronic locks have been added to protect our students and staff as well
as wireless access.  As we proceed in keeping with the rest of the world,
tablets will be added for faculty and students in the near future.  New
policies have been put in place to help everyone understand the importance
and dangers out there in regards to technology.

In addition to hardware, we have also updated many software programs. Everyone at BE will have an Office 365 account for as long as they attend school here. This means every student will have an email address provided by the school and access to Office 365 which includes SkyDrive (cloud storage) Outlook, Word, Excel and PowerPoint. This will make it much easier for students to work on homework, projects, collaborate and complete many electronic items.

Information about student's accounts will be given out during the first few days of school. This information will include how to log in to their new email accounts and how to access Office 365 from any place, anywhere. Flash drives will no longer be required since students will have cloud storage available to them. For those of you that are unfamiliar with cloud storage, think of it as a replacement for USB drives. Students will no longer have to carry around a small storage device that can break, get lost, or go through the laundry. They will be able to save their data to their own SkyDrive account which is saved to the cloud (Internet).

Our technology team continues on their search for ebooks and online resources to update and maintain their curricula. Very soon we will have a technology page for those of you interested in where we are going with technology. We will also be transitioning to a new grade book program. More details to follow.

Thank you for all your patience as we continue our improvement of quality and integrity in Technology.

Maria Smith
Director of Technology

The Sound Of Music!

The Bishop England Drama Club scores a huge success with "The Sound Of Music" last April.

The many talents of Bishop England's outstanding drama students were on full display last April when the Drama Club presented our most ambitious musical to date ... The Sound of Music.  The Bishops, well known for their athletic prowess, are establishing a strong reputation as a force on stage as well.  The large cast of "Sound of Music" ably handled this complex and demanding show which required excellence in singing, acting, dancing, speedy costume changes, and stage tech.  The nuns onstage even learned to sing in Latin.

Here are few fantastic moments from our production:

  Sound of Music

"The Sound of Music" is known around the world for its memorable songs such as "My Favorite Things," "Do-Re-Mi," "Climb Ev'ry Mountain," and "Edelweiss," as well as the stunning scenery in the movie. But this show has remained powerful since 1959 because it is also about things that matter to us all - finding full and meaningful lives, love and children, and having the courage to do what is right, even in the face of potentially devastating circumstances.

Bishop England's production starred David Sanchez as Captain von Trapp, Dixon Graham as Maria, and Sam Lawton as Max. The von Trapp family singers included Lara Brooksbank as Liesl, Donovan Thompson as Friedrich, Riley Graham as Louisa, Keegan Desciak as Kurt, Hannah Warren as Brigitta, Sarah Canterbury as Marta, and Holly Hildenbrand as Gretl among many others.

If you or any students you know would like to be a part of our wonderful Bishop England Stage Company for the 2013-2014 year, our resident director Cathy Slonecki and assistant director Heather Weed would be delighted to talk to you about opportunities onstage or behind the scenes with our fall play or spring musical.
