SCDL SPARK's a Reaction for Preschoolers

Did you know that 1/3 of all children entering Kindergarten are already behind the other children in their class? The Stark County District Library has partnered with Supporting Partnership to Assure Ready Kids (SPARK) to provide four on-staff parent partners for the program, which is an initiative started to ensure children and parents are ready for Kindergarten. The program is a collaboration between schools, families, and the community in nine Ohio counties and almost 40 schools! We are excited about the opportunity to help bridge the gap between home, school, and the library for more than 150 families in the school districts serving Canton City and Sandy Valley.

The SPARK program is grant-funded and operated through the Early Childhood Resource Center in Stark County. It is free and open to any family of a 3 or 4 year-old (depending on the nature of the program) living within the boundaries of the school where it is based. A parent partner visits the home of each family at least once a month to work on learning goals that range from knowing specific letters of the alphabet to using scissors correctly. It could also include social, emotional, and behavioral skills, based on several assessments the parent and parent partner complete during the initial visits.

SPARK's goal is to help improve parents' abilities to educate their children and help them become more engaged in the process as a family. It is exciting for the Stark County District Library to be a part of this program! Parents of a child in preschool (or preschool-aged) can visit SPARK's website for more information and to see if there is a program near you.

Tiny Confessions

by Christopher Rozzi

Ever wonder what your dachshund, bulldog, great dane, or tabby cat are 'really' thinking? Wonder no more, because artist and comedian Christopher Rozzi has channeled the innermost thoughts of canines and felines (along with the occasional rabbit or robot) and painted their portraits with great affection and humor.

A Very Simple Crime

by Grant Jerkins

A twisting debut novel of murder and dark family secrets from a riveting new voice in crime fiction. A murdered woman. A grieving husband. And their son--a mentally handicapped adult with a history of violent outbursts. A very simple case. Or is it? Leo Hewitt, an Assistant DA once blamed for setting free a notorious child-killer, is eager to redeem himself with this intimate and grisly crime.

Until Tuesday

by Luis Carlos Montalván

A highly decorated captain in the U.S. Army, Luis Montalván never backed down from a challenge during his two tours of duty in Iraq. After returning home from combat, however, the pressures of his physical wounds, traumatic brain injury, and crippling post-traumatic stress disorder began to take their toll.  Then Luis met Tuesday, a beautiful and sensitive golden retriever trained to assist the disabled. But because of a unique training situation and sensitive nature, Tuesday found it difficult to trust in or connect with a human being-until Luis.

Kids are Weird

by Jeffrey Brown

In charming colorful panels, Brown wryly illustrates his five year- old son's take on the world around him, from watching TV ("Elton John looks pretty in that shirt") to playing with toys ("This truck can survive on very little water") to odd requests ("Don't feel happy at me"), capturing the sweetly weird times that mothers and fathers everywhere experience.
