Like Poetry?

We are having two events for poetry lovers. On May 22 at 6:30 p.m., the Youth Poetry Café will feature readings by poets in 2nd through 12th grades who submitted original poems to our poetry contest. Adult poets may read their original poems at Open Mic Night on May 29 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Prize winners will be announced in both age groups. The readings will be held in the McKinley Room of the Main Library.

Parenting Tip: Give a Baby a Book

It is important to read to babies, no matter how old they are. Talking about a book and simply holding it open to a specific page is all they need. Babies who explore books at an early age are more likely to sit through an entire book when they get a little older than babies who don't have early access to them. Let your child explore pages of the book he is interested in. Describe the colors, the pictures, the words, the shapes, etc. Keep the baby's short attention span in mind. Don't get frustrated when she won't sit through an entire book or tries to turn the page before you read the words. Let the baby set the pace.
