E-readers Now Available!

Pre-downloaded e-readers are now available to borrow with a valid SCDL card at all 10 of the Stark County District Library locations.  The borrowing period is two weeks. See the SCDL website at www.starklibrary.org/circulating-e-readers for further information, terms and procedures regarding borrowing e-readers.  E-readers offer sharp, clear text which is easily adjustable in size and are lighter in weight than a paperback book. The SCDL e-readers offer over 85 selections, from classics such as "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland,' 'Frankenstein,' and 'Oliver Twist' to current titles such as 'The Hunger Games,' 'The Perks of Being a Wallflower,' and 'Fault in our Stars.' Borrowing an e-reader is a great way to try one before buying one. SCDL staff will be happy to assist those new to e-readers.

Meet Internet Sensation Chief Oliver!

David Oliver, Brimfield police chief and author of 'No Mopes Allowed: A Small Town Police Chief Rants and Babbles about Hugs and High Fives, Meth Busts, Internet Celebrity, and Adventures,' will share tales of being a police chief and maybe a  glimpse into his newly acquired celebrity status. Books will be  available for purchase. Chief Oliver uses the Brimfield, Ohio Police Department's Facebook page to interact with residents, and to report criminal activity and other notices, all with a sense of humor.  The department's Facebook page has generated national attention and boasts over 50,000 followers, which is a pretty big deal for the social media page of a small-town Ohio police department.

Parenting Tip: Did You Know?
  • 90% of a child's brain is developed by age 3
  • By age 3 a child's vocabulary can predict their third grade reading proficiency
  • Children who are not reading proficiently by the end of third grade are four times more likely to drop out of high school

How should parents instill good reading habits in their preschoolers?  Read to them daily. Set a good example by letting your children see you reading.  Have books for their age group around the house. We know of a great place to get these, and they're free to boot!  Visit the SCDL today!
