Landscape Design: Great Career Choice
I'm excited to be entering my third year of teaching landscape design at Emory University. The program has grown from a single class to a nine-month certification program comprised of six distinct classes.
Holly Brooks has come on board as co-teacher, bringing her own unique insights to the course.
It's been a challenge to condense my 20+ years experience into a teachable format, but it has forced me to focus on core elements of great landscaping, which, in turn, has made me a better designer.
What makes the program special is that we have built around our own experiences designing and installing countless landscapes. We have learned through trial and error the best plants, hardscapes, fountains and other details to use so that the finished yard functions as good as it looks.
The program covers six different classes that build on each other.
- Landscape Design 1: Understanding the Site
- Landscape Design 2: Designing Winning Landscape Plans
- Right Plant, Right Place: Succeeding With Plants
- Sticks and Stones: Hardscapes Made Simple
- Bringing the Plan to Life: Mastering Plan Graphics
- Capstone: Real World, Real Design
Landscape design is a great career choice because you get to make living sculptures that blend art and science. The program is geared to the serious amateur looking for a career change or the professional looking to add to his or her skill set.
