The Yardvocate
Simplify Your Landscape and Your Life
Greetings!

Welcome to the launch of our e-newsletter. The Yardvocate is a quick look at news and tips to help you simplify your landscape and your life. It's an outgrowth of our philosophy that landscaping should be three things: beautiful, healthy and loved.

We design and build landscapes that draw inspiration from nature and inspire people to get outside. Our process is simple too. We have one passionate person manage the process from initial site visit, to design, installation and the final walkthrough.

We hope you enjoy our newsletter.

Tip: Fallen Leaves are Black Gold

Don't throw out your leaves. Cut them up with your mower and spread them in your beds. They will become topsoil and replenish the soil.

Remember: if it falls in the yard, it stays in the yard. If not, the yard can become depleted of nutrients because you have broken nature's cycle.
Landscape Design: Great Career Choice

I'm excited to be entering my third year of teaching landscape design at Emory University. The program has grown from a single class to a nine-month certification program comprised of six distinct classes.

Holly Brooks has come on board as co-teacher, bringing her own unique insights to the course.

It's been a challenge to condense my 20+ years experience into a teachable format, but it has forced me to focus on core elements of great landscaping, which, in turn, has made me a better designer.

What makes the program special is that we have built around our own experiences designing and installing countless landscapes. We have learned through trial and error the best plants, hardscapes, fountains and other details to use so that the finished yard functions as good as it looks.

The program covers six different classes that build on each other.
  • Landscape Design 1: Understanding the Site
  • Landscape Design 2: Designing Winning Landscape Plans
  • Right Plant, Right Place: Succeeding With Plants
  • Sticks and Stones: Hardscapes Made Simple
  • Bringing the Plan to Life: Mastering Plan Graphics
  • Capstone: Real World, Real Design

Landscape design is a great career choice because you get to make living sculptures that blend art and science. The program is geared to the serious amateur looking for a career change or the professional looking to add to his or her skill set.

Landscape Course Testimonial

"Attending the Landscape Design program at Emory has proven to be a winning decision for both me and my company. I'm now able to provide prospective clients with creative landscape designs that are rooted in actual design principles that I acquired through the curriculum offered at Emory.

What's more, the Landscape Design program has instilled in me the confidence to draft preliminary drawings right there on the spot. As a result, my closing ratio has increased, and I'm not wasting time with a lot of return trips.

It's well worth the investment."
