Expert panellists to debate topical turnaround issues at TMA Europe conference

The role a founding entrepreneur plays in the turnaround of an SME will be deliberated by an expert panel at TMA Europe's annual conference in Rome.

The event, now in its ninth year, being held on 9 and 10 June at the Grand Hotel Plaza in the heart of the historic city, will see leading figures from the fields of turnaround and restructuring taking part in a series of speeches, panel debates and presentations.

The conference will include five panel sessions discussing some of the major challenges the industry faces from equity cram-down to NPL resolution efforts as well as debates on the specific issues involved in the turnaround of SMEs.

Marco Ghiringhelli, a senior director with Alvarez & Marsal Restructuring in Milan, who has more than 23 years of senior-level, hands-on management experience as both general and financial manager and corporate finance adviser, will chair the session considering the role of a founding entrepreneur or manager in a turnaround.

Mr Ghiringhelli, who as a chief restructuring officer and interim manager has led financial and operational restructuring of listed and private companies across a wide range of industries, said his panel would be specifically discussing whether a founding entrepreneur was an asset or a liability in a turnaround process.

He said: "The distinction between management and shareholders in an SME or family business is often blurred. The panel will be looking at the issues this raises for turnaround professionals, and how compatible this business model is with the turnaround values and multidisciplinary skills required for a successful work-out. We will also be considering what role a manager or entrepreneur should play in a turnaround or a succession process, and also what role there is for the founder's culture and core values."

Discussing these issues as panellists will be Thomas Welte, a partner of Autaco in Germany; Domen Prasnikar, managing partner of Valior Financial Advisory in Slovenia; Nick Moser, partner of Taylor Wessing in the UK; Jimmy Clarini, partner of Entriage in Italy; and Georgios Charalampous, of the Hellenic Bank in Greece.

The annual TMA Europe conference has become one of the industry's leading events for turnaround professionals, with last year's event in Stockholm attended by more than 170 delegates.

It is the ideal opportunity for colleagues from across the continent to get together and share ideas and best practice, as well as learn about key developments in turnaround management.

2016 Turnaround of the Year Awards - Call for Entries

Entries have opened for TMA Europe's prestigious annual Turnaround of the Year Awards.

The awards, which are now in their fifth year, aim to celebrate the achievements of the individual or team of TMA turnaround professionals who have orchestrated the most successful recovery of a struggling company.

There are two categories, one for a small company whose revenue at the onset of the turnaround was less than 100 million Euros, and one for a large company whose revenue at the onset of the turnaround was more than 100 million Euros.

Submissions for the awards are assessed on the main actions taken to bring about around the turnaround, the issues that arose and how they were overcome, as well as the eventual outcome.

The winners of the awards will be announced at TMA Europe's pre conference banquet being held this year at the Grand Hotel Plaza in Rome, Italy, on 9 June 2016.

The deadline for entries is TODAY.

Will the EU Regulation's March 2014 recommendation to adopt more flexible pre insolvency processes affect the UK?

In March 2014 the European Commission published its recommendation on "a new approach to business failure and insolvency" which set out minimum standards for a restructuring framework in each member state. The broad market reaction in the UK was mixed ranging from supportive from those sectors favouring facilitation of consensual restructuring ahead of formal process to "it ain't broke don't fix it", particularly from the Insolvency profession. The latter view was the dominant view in the UK Government response of March 2015.  Read more...
