TMA Europe Post Conference Report
by John Willcock, Editor, Global Turnaround
The annual conference of TMA Europe attracted around 150 participants this year and perhaps not surprising looking out at the spectacular harbour view from the Grand Hotel in Stockholm on a sunny summer's day.
But it was not just the Swedish capital's beautiful architecture that was the draw. As conference co-chair Fredrik Vernersson of PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) told the opening session:
"I believe we all in this room share a passion for value creation; we all want to avoid value destruction."
"We also all have hands-on experience of turnaround," Vernersson added.
As always, TMA's global leadership had crossed the pond in force to attend the annual European event, and TMA Global chairperson Judge Kevin Carey welcomed the first keynote speaker: Alexander Graf Matuschka-Greiffenclau, CTO of Nokia.

TMA Europe Roundtable Develops a Unified Voice
on Financial Services Turnaround
by John Willcock, Editor, Global Turnaround
Around thirty of Spain's leading experts on financial services turnaround met for the inaugural Madrid TMA Europe Roundtable on 28 May.
The main aim of the Roundtables is to break down barriers between stakeholders in Europe' banking industry, in order to develop a coherent guiding voice for regulators.
The need is urgent; the challenge huge. Non Performing Loans (NPLs) represent almost one third of the entire banking market in Europe.
If the continent's banks are ever to break free from the paralysing hold on these NPLs and return to their vital function in the economy, lending to business, then something urgently has to change.
With the theme 'How can Madrid continue to build big opportunities in post AQR Europe?', over 30 key figures in the turnaround profession came together to debate how best to tackle these NPLs - and how to smooth their way from the banks into the hands of new owners.

EACTP Celebrates its Founding Fifty
Europe's pioneering accreditation association for turnaround management professionals has welcomed its 50th member.
The association, which has presented commemorative awards to its 'Founding Fifty', now has 54 members from 13 European countries.
EACTP has created the first pan European accreditation programme for turnaround professionals to provide an industry standard of quality in turnaround and restructuring.
Certificates were presented to the first ten turnaround practitioners to qualify as members of the EACTP at TMA Europe's annual conference two years ago. At this year's conference in Stockholm, Founding Fifty awards were handed out to EACTP members.
Tyrone Courtman, who has been President of EACTP since it was launched, said: "All involved with EACTP believe our accreditation provides a much-needed European kitemark of quality for our profession. We also feel EACTP has an important role to play in raising awareness of the benefits of what we do, and helping to demonstrate the significance of turnaround management as a specialised profession.
"It is very pleasing to see our membership flourishing as turnaround professionals across Europe realise the value of becoming a Certified Turnaround Professional."
Ian Gray, chair of EACTP's Standards and Admissions Committee, added: "This is an important milestone for EACTP and we wanted to mark it by acknowledging our first fifty members."
The EACTP's accreditation is based on TMA Global's well-established CTP programme.
