Latest update on RPL Strategic Plan !

The Rye Public Library Strategic Plan Progress Committee is pleased to report our latest findings at the fifth checkpoint on progress toward our planning goals. As you can review in our latest report, our current progress status of 74% completion represents a 25% change since our report last spring. We are proud of the many avenues of advancement taken in the interim time, and the multiple outcomes represented by this progress. Based on our earlier findings, we were able to focus our activity on those areas within our four main goals that had not progressed as quickly as other objectives.

We've concentrated on these areas in order to move all four goals forward and bring us to the great level of progress we measure at our latest checkpoint.  Please review all our reporting documentation at the RPL website and feel free to contact us with any questions or comments.

We'll reconvene a larger Strategic Planning Committee beginning in the new year to begin designing a continuation of the current plan.  We'll conduct new research and incorporate findings from an RPL space needs and utilization study soon to be conducted.

Friends of the Rye Public Library Honored

Representatives of the New Hampshire Library Trustees Association, President Ed Moran and directors Susan Gaudiello and Conrad Moses traveled to Rye to present the Friends of the Rye Public Library with the 2014 Sue Palmatier Award For Outstanding Support By A "Friends Of The Library" Group on Tuesday evening October 14. With all the Friends officers and many members present, Friends President Katie Jaffarian received the award on behalf of the group. The Board of Trustees of the Rye Public Library, who nominated the Friends of RPL in recognition of the extraordinary level, variety, and innovation of support they offer to the Rye Public Library, and the civic engagement of this outstanding group, also proudly attended the award ceremony.

NHLTA President Moran commended the Friends of the Rye Public Library for their longstanding excellence, and leadership in the State. He encouraged the local group to share their model at the State level through future outreach and conference involvement. Moran cited the remarkable participation, innovation, and dedication that made the Rye Friends stand out in the annual award process.

In her remarks, Rye Public Library Trustee Chair Karen Oliver further emphasized the importance and involvement of this remarkable group whose membership drive and community advocacy provide invaluable annual support to the mission and vision of the Rye Public Library.

Please help extend well deserved congratulations to the Friends of the Rye Public Library, and please consider joining the Friends to have fun while supporting RPL.

Book Review: Emma Straub's
The Vacationers
by Gwen Putnam-Bailey

I read this thoroughly enjoyable book in just a few sittings and it was a treat to return to it each time.   It is a simple story of a family and a couple of friends from New York who go on vacation to the island of Mallorca. As the novel unfolds, each character deals with their own issues. There's the teenage daughter who wishes to reach a significant life milestone (don't ask) before entering college, and her parents who are trying to celebrate their 35th wedding anniversary, but must forgive a marital betrayal first...

Emma Straub writes with refreshing insight into the lives of her characters. The reader finds herself rooting for characters despite their flaws and sometimes poor judgment calls. Ms. Straub manages to weave humor and sensitivity into the novel allowing hopefulness for the future ahead for this slightly dysfunctional, yet loving family. A great book to transport you from these colder days!
