Happy Summer!

This is the second edition of our technology newsletter! We will try to provide the most relevant technology news and tips & tricks each quarter. Did you know you can now schedule individual morning sessions with me on Mondays and Fridays mornings as well as Thursday evenings for Computer Tutor or Device Advice?  Non-Rye residents may also set up an appointment.

Have you seen our new Summer Tech Talk class schedule yet? We have a special "Technology Petting Zoo" session on July 2nd at 9:30. This will give everyone an opportunity to try out some different devices. Mark it on your calendar!

Going away for a few days or for vacation? Don't want to go to the bottom of the hold queue?
Suspend your holds until the day you get back. This is done from within your online account. To benefit all patrons, we are happy to hold materials for 3 business days. For help or further explanation, talk to one of the librarians next time you stop in.

Linux - Great for older laptops for browsing

Do you have an older laptop computer running XP that you'd still like to use for browsing the web? You can with the Linux operating system. It's FREE, light, and easy to install. The only catch is purchasing a wireless network card that will works with Linux. You can get one through Amazon for as little as $20. Talk to me if this is something of interest.

BEST TABLETS

Cool Apps
Songza - Sometimes picking out the perfect music can be difficult, especially if you have a huge library. Songza lets you set your specific mood and location and streams appropriate music.

WhatsApp - This app is one of several newer apps that allow real time messaging with text, voice and photos. Chat in a group without using up your alloted text messages and it has a cool location sharing feature.

Average Camera Pro (iOS) - Allows you to take long-exposure shots with your iPhone to get a clear picture at night. It also takes multiple pictures, calculates the average picture out of the ones taken and normalizes the result, making the lightest pixel become white.
Sincerely,
