Mango Languages Featured in June
After the great success of our Tech Fair (sponsored by the Friends of the Rye Public Library on Saturday May 27), we have continued to offer a focus series featuring one of the many databases offered for your home use via our website. Each month, we'll delve deeper into the details of a specific database. (see schedule details on the left sidebar) During June, our feature has been Mango Languages, an on-line language resource available to RPL card-holders through our website! Learn any of the many languages offered through introductory or in-depth courses, at your own pace, from your home computer or here at the Library.

We'll also create tutorials like the one here for each database we detail, and offer them for your reference through the website. Next month we'll feature our genealogy resources as the monthly focus, as well as in our computer class schedule, and our monthly Genealogy Club: Generations.

another behind the scenes at RPLarticle By Juliette Doherty, RPL Adult Svcs Asst. Librarian
Have you ever noticed the beautiful art hanging in the Rye Public Library both upstairs and in our community meeting room? Approximately every three months the art displays change, ranging from students to art groups and individual artists. It is such a pleasure to work here and see such creativity right before my eyes day after day. A few years ago I had the privilege of purchasing a beautiful water color on display by the late Jeanne Craig, a longtime and dear patron of RPL, and it hangs in my living room. Jeanne and others like here are so inspiring that it's made me want to try my hand at water colors or acrylics. In fact, a few weeks ago I opened up my first tin of water colors and got to work. The theme for the community meeting room's next art display is "Barns", so I've painted a little barn. It's not exactly great art, but for a first attempt I'm pleased, and I've discovered I just love painting trees! RPL has some great books for beginning artists. Check out
The Complete Guide to Watercolor by Ray Smith & Elizabeth Jane Lloyd, and also Painting Amazing Watercolors from Photographs by Henry W. Dixon.
You can also go to the RPL home page and click on our online library, and look at the art and drawing courses listed under Universal Class... you can take a free art course in the privacy of your own home with just your library card and pin number!
Another great way to exercise your talents would be to join the
" Drawing Together" group that meets right here in RPL's community meeting room on Tuesday morning from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. with local artist Claire Russo. Need help with any of this? Please stop in and visit with us... we can't wait to inspire you!
[ Our current art displays feature works by Brian Coleman ( pictured above) upstairs; and work by Rye Elementary School students downstairs --July through September]

The ImpossibleA Film Reviewby Gwen Putnam-Bailey RPL Adult Svcs Asst. Librarian
This film is based on the true story of a family's harrowing experience during the tsunami that hit Thailand on Dec. 26, 2004. It starts off with the family enjoying a Christmas holiday at a lovely beachfront resort, then suddenly their lives are turned into disaster. The family of five becomes torn apart during the catastrophe and the film documents their will to survive and reunite.
The acting by all the family members is commendable which adds to the emotional impact for the viewer. It is very realistic, and has some scenes in the beginning that may make some viewers squeamish. In addition it portrays shock and trauma with young children that parents may be wary of for youngsters.
I found it to be an authentic and powerful drama of a family that will sacrifice almost anything for each other. The film is very appropriately rated at PG-13, and stars Naomi Watts and Ewan McGregor.
