climbing and reading at RPL!

Greetings!

We had a great climbing session on Wednesday night after a good discussion of chapters 1-11.  We caught up on some comments on the first five chapters and brought the discussion up to date.  Sadly, we were down to three for the climbing, but let's try to end on a high note and rally for next Tuesday 2/12 at the Metrorock gym in Newburyport!

We'll meet at the library as usual at 5:30 and head down by carpool to arrive by 6:30.  Then plan for Friday 2/15 to enjoy the film version of TTV at the Library.
Sincerely,

Andrew Richmond

We got some video from last climbing session, and I put it to music by Andy Hall (a guitar composition inspired by TTV and called Suila[sic] Grande.  Enjoy!

Prussik Knot
We discussed the knot that Joe is trying to tie before he drops the cord from his frozen hands.  The knot is called a prussik, and a pair of them allow you to climb a rope.  We tried (above) the technique out at New Heights.  Check out the video below to see how it's done.

Our Book
Touching the Void by Joe Simpson is " a document of psychological, even philosophical, witness to the rarest compulsion".  Touching the Void was written 20 years ago and yet is still the benchmark all mountaineering literature is measured against.  The book tells the story of a two-man climbing venture gone bad on the remote Andean peak of Siula Grande.  Evoking the essence of the freedom, danger and rewards of mountaineering, it also offers a raw look at the human capacity for survival.

The Voice
We talked quite a bit about the "Voice" or force that kept Joe moving during the worst of his escape.  Was it divine or internal?  Here's some info on this type of event, often called the "Third Man" phenomenon

Our final session on Friday February 15 will be a viewing of the outstanding film adaptation of the book.  We'll have a chance to compare the book with the film and enjoy an excellent film.
